Today during the March of Independence in Warsaw (Poland), nationalist militants broke off from the march and attacked the squat "Przychodnia" social centre. They were trying to "get" the centre. The police stood by and did not intervene for at least 20 minutes read full story / add a comment

A fire broke out this morning at around 2am in Tom Kelly Flats, Charlemont Street, leaving many people trapped inside their homes. Residents in the 3rd – Block were woken to the yells of “Fire!” by a concerned neighbour in the adjacent block, as the blaze quickly engulfed the main hall and stairway. read full story / add a comment

Last week Detroit was officially declared bankrupt . Long time downtown residents of the city last week vowed to resist evictions planned in order to sell off their homes to the super rich . The evictions are being touted as essential cost saving measures - part of an emergency plan involving "gentrification" of the Metropolitan area of the city. Writing in the Herald yesterday, TV economics pundit Eddie Hobbs advised Irish people with at least a million to invest that the smart money was going on premium location properties in "distressed" cities like Detroit . He told the Herald : "We are currently investing heavily for clients in Metro Detroit. " read full story / add a comment

From Justice Minister Alan Shatter's statement on mortgage default and repossessions ,Dec 2012 "All mortgages contain remedies that may be exercised by lending institutions in cases of mortgage default. Repossession in the event of such default is, therefore, an existing contractual right. In a well-known 2011 case (Start Mortgages), the High Court found that enactment of reforming legislation in 2009 may have had the unintended consequence in certain cases of restricting lending institutions from asserting their repossession rights. read full story / add a comment

The central bank is planning changes to the Code of Protection on mortgage arrears, these changes will mean it will be easier for people to be counted as non co-operating and thus make repossession easier, please send the submission below to code@centralbank.ie or make your own submission and send before April 10th to ensure your opposition to this is taken into consideration, with 95,000 people in arrears because of this banking led recession, the people who are bailing out the banks need fairness, there is nothing fair in all powers of discretion, supervision and appeals being with the banks who will not consider the good of the person or common good of the country. read full story / add a comment

The Anti Eviction Taskforce (AET) have written to all Government Ministers across all political parties on behalf of all distressed mortgage holders in Ireland today, delivering a mandate to bring a motion before the Dáil to ban eviction in Ireland. This letter will arrive on the desks of all Ministers on February 4th 2013. To explain the logic behind this mandate: The Government and Financial institutions continue to ignore the issue of distressed mortgages, which is resulting in much family distress, family break-up and, in some cases, suicide. While, as yet, eviction is not an everyday occurrence, it is only a matter of time before eviction becomes common place. This threat, along with the inaction by both the Government and Financial Institutions to devise credible resolution is disabling distressed mortgage holders and resulting in impasse. read full story / add a comment

Cutting rent supplement has allowed the FG/Labour government to continue to make large cuts to the social welfare budget whilst claiming not to be touching "basic social welfare rates". The reality is that because it is left to tenants to negotiate with their landlords for a rent reduction, rather than such negotiations being undertaken by the department itself, this is rather like David negotiating with goliath and the tenant inevitably has to pay the not inconsiderable difference out of their already reduced social welfare payment. read full story / add a comment

Squatting is on the rise again in these times of austerity (see for example the recent occupations of flats in Southern Spain, mostly carried out by housewives and families). An Italian project that’s caught my attention since its beginning is in Pisa, where last year’s Occupy protests evolved into the reappropriation and transformation of abandoned buildings for the benefit of the local community. read full story / add a comment

Republican Network for Unity (RNU) notes with increasing concern, the growing practice of what can only be described as extortionism, being carried out by private landlords within working class nationalist areas and beyond. When observing average rents, it is clear that private landlords here are exploiting historical housing shortages in order to demand amounts well above what is provided by housing benefit. read full story / add a comment

In September 2009, hundreds of Carabinieri stormed a school in the Magliana area of Rome and arrested dozens of people who were occupying it. The charges made against them were super harsh: organised crime, extortion, possession of weapons, theft, assaulting police officers, and more. read full story / add a comment

Today the NAMA To Nature group struck again. This time in Cherrywood industrial estate, Dublin near the Luas line. In an act of civil disobedience a group of 12 people in business suits started planted trees this morning at 7am on an area of wasteland beside the Luas track along the edges and ridges to help shield the eyesore from the nearby apartment block part of which is a ghost estate. Ireland has over 600 ghost estates and 40,000 empty dwellings. Rather than watch the government dither and procrastinate let's help nature take them back. read full story / add a comment

On Saturday 28th January Unlock NAMA opened an occupied building in the center of Dublin for a day of lectures about NAMA, Ireland's 'Bad Bank.' The event was cut short by a large number of police who turned up and ordered them out of the building.
