Sat Nov 1st is going to be a Right2Water National Day of Local Protests from 12am onwards The Right2Water campaign is helping to coordinate dozens of local demonstrations across Ireland, all due to take place on November 1st. Following on from one of the largest national demonstrations in Irish history, the Right2Water campaign says it will continue to build a mass movement of opposition to water charges. The campaign – which involves trade unions, political parties and community groups – believes people are angry and unified in their opposition to these unfair charges. The campaign is asking all anti-water charges groups – including political parties – to unify and work together to ensure as large a demonstration as possible in their home towns and cities. read full story / add a comment

Single issue demands such as the movement against water rates hold back the class struggle by suggesting that capitalism can continue in the absence of these charges or taxes. This is because such demands are not embedded in a programme of an interlinked series of demands that challenges the capitalist system. read full story / add a comment

The Irish government is charging for public water as part of its TISA signup. This is just the start, we will all pay for all water if they have their way, even if we don't get any services from Irish Water. The eventual plan will be to privatize all resources so that absolutely nothing will be free in this country. read full story / add a comment

Irish Water has sent you an ‘application pack’ and they want you to fill in details about your household, including your PPS number. Don't engage. People power can beat them. Resistance to Irish Water has taken in hold in many estates that have been protesting. There is a massive national demonstration on October 11th at 2pm, stating at the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin. Water is becoming a corporate resource - the sell off of Irish Water is almost certain
Call me a cynic, but I am absolutely convinced that the current Irish government has created Uisce Éireann (Irish Water) with the sole purpose of selling Ireland’s water rights to the private sector within the next decade.
Already Uisce Éireann has wasted over €80 million euro in consultancy fees paid to the private sector and it will continue to use private sector contractors to carry out its work, at as yet unknown cost. It is only the fact that it would be political suicide for the government right now that prevents a share issue in the near future. read full story / add a comment

Opposition to water charges has taken the Direct Action route with residents in a Cork housing estate preventing workers from Irish Water from installing smart meters. Irish Water is the quango that has so far provided over €70 million in setup fees to consultants and various private firms and the government reckons it will cost up to €1,000 million to get it fully run and running. It will then be handed over to the private sector so that they can squeeze hard pressed people for money for the rest of their lives. read full story / add a comment

broadsheet.ie have put together a great timelline for the activities of Irish water thus far. It makes for very interesting reading. That is, If you are into reading about how our lords and masters and their capitalist friends are taking us for a ride at our own expense and the loss of what should be very basic state run services that should never be run as for profit services. Luke Ming Flanagan had done his research. He knew that the word ‘piss’ was not a banned word within the rarified and sensitive environs of Dail Eireann. He had checked out the Consumer Act in order to bolster his political point. He then planned and carried out a very clever and effective political stunt to guarantee maximum publicity. FIVE YEARS after the onset of economic crisis, the policy of bank bail-outs and austerity is a disastrous failure. Unemployment remains at crisis levels and tens of thousands of educated young people leave the country every year. Over 180,000 people are unable to pay their mortgages; poverty and homelessness are on the rise; and workers’ pay, conditions and rights are under serious attack . Vulnerable groups such as those with disabilities, mental health issues, special needs or lone parents are repeatedly attacked. Our health, education and public services are being cut to ribbons. We need to come together to co-ordinate resistance to further cuts and austerity taxes in the forthcoming budget. read full story / add a comment

The CAHWT today responded to a claim by Revenue spokesperson, Vivienne Dempsey, that payment of the property tax is "inevitable". CAHWT spokesperson, Ruth Coppinger, said : "There is nothing inevitable about paying the property tax. People can and will choose to take part in a boycott as a way of exerting political pressure on the government. Hundreds of thousands are likely to take part in an organised boycott of this unjust bondholder tax. Many have simply decided they have no more to give." read full story / add a comment

The anti-property tax demo took place today (Sat) assembling at the Garden of Remembrance / Parnell Square and then heading off down O'Connell street and to Dublin Castle. There was a turnout of between approximately 5,000 and 8,000. At Dublin Castle the entrance was sealed off by a line of Garda. Crowds gathered just below where a platform was setup where a number of speakers spoke to the crowd. read full story / add a comment
