Increasingly the patient is no longer seen as a passive recipient of medical treatment. Attempts are being made, at least at an ideological level, to involve patients more in the design of medication and to lend some weight to what patients really think of medication and how it is affecting them. Naturally there are life saving chemicals like penicillin, insulin and cytamen (for vitamin B12) but there is a plethora of more optional drugs on the market not least a whole cabinet of neuroleptic drugs. From my own observations as a patient for over 30 years attending clinics and hospitals throughout that period it is unclear whether many of these drugs have an authentic role in (a) preserving life or (b) in improving the quality of life of the patient. read full story / add a comment

Rooming in’ involves the care of a newborn infant in a cot near the mother’s bed instead of in a nursery during their hospital stay. This has very many positive advantages for the mother and baby in terms of bonding and getting to know the new baby’s routine in the early days of its life and also the instant availability of the mother for feeding, a recognised bonding time be it bottle or breast. Rooming in also has many advantages for maternity hospitals in terms reduction in requirements for nursery spaces in hospitals and therefore, reduction in numbers of staff required to supervise the nurseries and take care of the infants. Most Irish maternity hospitals operate a full rooming in policy but the question is - Do Irish Maternity Hospitals support rooming in? read full story / add a comment

“Every woman deserves to have her mother in the delivery room with her” I remember reading these words on rollercoaster.ie years ago from a young scared Irish woman due with her first baby. Her heartfelt plea for help…her desperation for ANY suggestion ….of ANY possible way that she could persuade her maternity hospital to make the exception to the rule and allow her mother and husband in with her for the labour and birth. Likewise I remember the replies of other women…women who have gone through it before…women who dripped with cynicism because they too would have liked this choice but knew what her outcome would be. The pain, confusion and fear of that sad, sad post have stayed with me over the years. Unfortunately it looks like very little has changed for women in some areas of Ireland . While many maternity units around the country are receptive of additional birthing partners and Doulas, the Dublin hospitals remain unresponsive. The singularly profit driven Corporations have lied and lied regarding food additives, tobacco and climate changing pollutants. They only respond to VERY LARGE financial disincentives. A drive to sign up whole populations for a class action against these polluters is a great start for future mental and physical health. This action may also reveal the combination of additives in foods and the water supply that impairs the human will. Never before in human history have entire populations become so subservient, helpless and passive in the most alarming circumstances. The apathy and complacency witnessed today in the face of horrendous illegal wars, pollution induced climate change/GLOBAL warming, to name the two most catastrophic events, is beyond comprehension. Hit them hard and hit them in the pocket, the "class" of the action should include the entire population -- you and your children have been poisoned! read full story / add a comment

Following a very successful publicity campaign and public protest the serious issue of the Galway water crisis, how it is being handled, and how it is affecting the households of Galway, is now being highlighted. Outside City Hall, at a demonstration attended by 300 Galway residents, a letter of immediate demands was handed personally to the City Manager Mr. Mc Grath, and to those elected representatives that joined the protesters in solidarity. read full story / add a comment

Sligo Borough Council voted down a motion condemning the governments policy which will tax aid speculators to build a private hospital on public land beside Sligo General Hospital. This is the first Council to endorse what amounts to the beginning of the privatisation of the Health Service. read full story / add a comment

Advocacy is an "in" term these days. When we advocate are we really pursuing the best interests of those on whose behalf we are advocating? Or are we only trying to placate and tell people what they want to hear? Then, too, there are often a lot of stock cribs which advocates may parrot easily off in the hope of gaining kudos or easy respect from the judges - the administrators and the public. read full story / add a comment

In Rathmines, Harold's Cross and Crumlin we are to lose St Luke's Hospital. In fact, the hospital scandal stretches further than that. We are to lose a cancer hospital which will be amalgamated with St James, the high property values allowed Minster Mc Dowell's Sidekick to sign the lands to speculators. There is a clinic in that hospital complex used by the parents of kids with CF and asthma called Lukedoc/Dubdoc- one TD from the area put down the question re losing our clinic published below is the reply from Mary Harney. read full story / add a comment

Most readers and contributors to Indymedia, I presume, would be against the arms trade and money going towards 'third-world' exploitation, deforestation, or animal testing for eg., yet every one of us contributes to these decidely unethical practices. read full story / add a comment

Over the past few years operators have been allowed to exploit mobile phone owners by misleading them into "subscriptiopn servcies" where they are exploited. Its time to call a halt. read full story / add a comment |
