The event is Free and it is recommended to wear warm clothing a rain coat and comfortable shoes. This walk is led by Conor Kelleher from Cork County Bat Group in conjunction with Irish Wildlife Trust Cork branch for Lifelong Learning Week. Conor will talk about different bat species, the importance of bats in nature, their diet and their habitat. Ahead of tomorrow’s opening of the An Bord Pleanala hearing into the plans for the clean up of the old steel plant’s toxic dump on Haulbowline Island, Friends of the Irish Environment [FIE] has called for the work to be extended to the site of the steel plant itself. The current proposal is limited to the 9 hectare waste dump on the island. FIE says numerous reports show that the contamination on the island includes not just the 9 hectare East Tip which is the subject of the license hearing but the 12 hectare site of the steel plant itself which is being ignored. read full story / add a comment

On midday on Friday 7th March the Institute of Chemical Engineers - and their corporate sponsors, Shell - had organised for an engineer from Shell's Corrib Gas Project to give a talk and workshop for staff and students of the Engineering College at UCC. A cork group formed and mobilsed to attend the lecture, distribute independent information on Corrib and challenge any Shell spin. read full story / add a comment

It is estimated that between 60,000 to 80,000 one year old farmed salmon have escaped from a salmon farm at Gerahies, Bantry Bay, County Cork with an added undetermined number of smaller fish escaping after a bad storm on Saturday 1st February 2014. Save Bantry Bay said: ‘We are particularly concerned because of the very real likelihood of further escapees. The protective nets have been stripped by the gales and the seas are overtopping the cages, allowing salmon to escape and predators like seals to enter.’ read full story  / add a comment

American singer-songwriter David Rovics plays Cork’s Spailpín Fanach, in South Main Street on Wednesday Jan 22nd 2014 at 8PM Rovics has been a modern Bob Dylan, singing songs about the Iraq War and social justice issues. Rovics started out as a busker in Boston’s subways before concentrating on his craft and recording albums. He has self-released all his recordings, and has also made them available as free downloads. He is also a writer for left-wing newspapers and magazines. His music has been featured by the BBC and other TV stations. read full story / add a comment

There are some events taking place in the coming weeks to try to advance the building of our movement for democracy, if you can support these it would help. In particular, we are asking people from county Cork as well as from Waterford, Tipperary and Kerry to join with us on Saturday 14th, to mark the Troika's departure on the 15th. Note that the events are hosted by The People's Convention, everyone welcome, however no Political Party banners or promotions are welcome, we ask participants to focus on the subject matter of the events and to leave aside any promotion of personal philosophy or 'ism' - in the interests of achieving the broadest possible unity. read full story / add a comment

The Gathering-RSVP is an experimental collaboration of artists, located internationally, responding to the question of what it means to be Irish today, in a 2 hr promenade theatre presentation, integrating film, music, dance and poetry with community arts participation.  This project is produced by RSVP (Red Sandstone Varied Productions,) Kinsale, Co. Cork, Ireland and directed by Yvonne Coughlan.
