While many Indymedia readers are probably not fans of any of the prospective presidential candidates in the US, I thought this analysis of the coverage was quite interesting and worth putting up. While I don't agree with all the points made, it does provide some interesting and disturbing commentary on the media coverage, and the way in which feminisation of the candidates is seen as a way of degrading them (particularly in relation to Clinton, of course). While I'm not her greatest fan, I do think some of the points made here and the examples given show how deep the distrust of female leadership still goes in Western society. Obama has faced some ethnocentric bias too, but it seems his charisma and gender are saving him from the worst of it. read full story / add a comment

"The licence of the magazine Zanan ('Women') managed by Shahla Sherkat has been cancelled as the monthly published articles undermining public confidence in law and order by leading people to believe that the Islamic republic was unsafe for women," the FARS news agency has reported citing an official it did not name.

Shahla Sherkat author, directing editor & founder of "Zanan" (="women") has told a handful of western news organisations that she has not been contacted by the Iranian state & learnt of the news herself on the FARS website. FARS is not the official Iranian news service (that's IRNA) but it seems quite likely. Her last monthly offering published a feature on gender violence & included a monthly toll. read full story / add a comment

A report below by the Iraq Freedom Congress on the continuing attacks on women by Islamist gangs. But IFC point out that the occupation forces bear full responsibility for the practices of these gangs.

Unidentified gangs began to commit a series of organized crimes and killing many women in various cities in Iraq, particularly in Basra where more than 40 women are said to have been killed in the last 5 months. In addition to those crimes, these gangs threatened unveiled women to follow Islamic law and start wearing head scarf otherwise facing the severe consequences. read full story / add a comment

Here is a report on the continuing detention of womens rights activists in Iran and a call for action on their behalf.

Human rights groups and journalists across the globe have condemned the arrest of cyber feminists, Jelve Javaheri and Maryam Hossienkhah in Iran earlier this month. Both of these women are activists and members of the One Million Signatures campaign. They are currently in Evin Prison on charges related to their writings in support of women’s rights. read full story / add a comment

This is an article on the situation of women in the Middle East. It was first published on open democracy blog for international day against violence against women.

The undeclared war on women continues to victimize women worldwide on a daily basis; the Middle East is no exception. Women in our region are amongst the most oppressed and terrorized in the world. The Islamic law upheld in many Middle Eastern countries has turned women into slaves with invisible chains.

In Saudi Arabia in March 2006, a woman was abducted with a friend and was raped by 7 men. In October, the men were sentenced to 2-3 years in prison, but the woman herself was sentenced to 90 lashes. Saudi Arabian Islamic law forbids a woman to meet with a man to whom she is not related. The woman and her solicitor appealed the sentence; the men's sentences were increased from 2 to 9 years in prison, but the woman's sentence was also increased as a result to 200 lashes and 6 months in prison. read full story / add a comment

This brutal judical murder of a young man whose only crime was to be gay is further proof that Iran is ruled by a Fascist Dictatorship.

The news has just reached us. Makwan was executed last night (local time) in Dizel Abad Prison in the city of Kermanshah. Makwan's family have just collected his body and are on their way to the city of Paveh. Around 200 cars are following in procession the car carrying the body of a youngster murdered in cold blood by a bunch of criminal thugs.

This crime must be recorded in history. Not only that the criminals in power in Iran must be indicted through international courts. Makwan had not committed any crime. He was executed for a sexual relation with a class mate when they were both 13. He was executed for homosexuality.

Maryam Hosseinkhah wrote this article in Evin Prison. Maryam was arrested on November 17 in relation to her activities and writings in defense of equal rights for women. On the 18th, a very high bail order was issued in her case. Maryam couldnt meet it and she was committed to Evin Prison.

This is prison; the women's ward of Evin prison. This is not my first time here; not the first time I've come to Evin. The first time, I came here as a journalist. Alongside the warden, I walked from cell to cell to listen to the stories of women who were here on charges of addiction, prostitution and murder. read full story / add a comment

Delaram Ali, a Womens rights activist has been sentenced to be flogged and to serve 34 months in prison. Her "crime: demonstrating for womens Rights.

Delaram Ali has been told to present herself to court in order to start serving a prison sentence which has not formally been conveyed to her. She has been told that if she does not attend court by 10 November, she will be arrested.

There is also a risk that she will be flogged. If she is detained, Amnesty International would consider her to be a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for the peaceful exercise of her right to freedom of expression and association for her activities promoting women’s rights in Iran. The Head of the Judiciary has the power to suspend Delaram Ali’s sentence and to order a reinvestigation of the case. read full story / add a comment
