Houzan Mahmoud, Representative of the Organisation of Women's Freedom in Iraq has been threatened by Islamic Fundamentalists. On February 26, 2007, Houzan received an e-mail signed by Ansar al-Islam, the notoriously brutal jihadist group based in Kurdistan/Iraq. The death threat, delivered via e-mail, read: "With the permission of Great God, we will kill you either in Iraq or in London by the middle of March, because you are campaigning against Islam. You should be sent to God for punishment." read full story / add a comment

The Union of Students in Ireland organised today a protest about the blood ban operated by the Department of Health on Gay men. It is now widely accepted that the best way to ensure a safe blood supply is to refuse blood from anyone engaged in high risk behaviour - rather than the current situation where hetrosexuals engaged in high risk promiscuous sexual activity will have their blood accepted while gay men involved low risk monogamous relationships will have their blood refused. read full story / add a comment

Liberia is a strange place. It is (correct me if I'm wrong oh do) the only state which was established in the African continent by purchase rather than historical national process [Ethiopia], or colonisation [almost all of the continent] or by subsequent independence from the "metropoles". The story of Liberia began with the emancipated afro-americans of the mid-19th century and the "black star" chartered by Marcus Garvey to establish a "homeland" which within the idealism of the subsequent DuBois would form the bulwark of a "pan-Africa". Today Liberia seems remote from the utopia planned by its founders, it is a country associated with horrible tribal warfare & for decades was the playground of mercenaries. But its slow recovery may be helped by the arrival of the first women only contingent of UN peace-keeping troops read full story / add a comment
