Cutting rent supplement has allowed the FG/Labour government to continue to make large cuts to the social welfare budget whilst claiming not to be touching "basic social welfare rates". The reality is that because it is left to tenants to negotiate with their landlords for a rent reduction, rather than such negotiations being undertaken by the department itself, this is rather like David negotiating with goliath and the tenant inevitably has to pay the not inconsiderable difference out of their already reduced social welfare payment. read full story / add a comment

Squatting is on the rise again in these times of austerity (see for example the recent occupations of flats in Southern Spain, mostly carried out by housewives and families). An Italian project that’s caught my attention since its beginning is in Pisa, where last year’s Occupy protests evolved into the reappropriation and transformation of abandoned buildings for the benefit of the local community. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Republican Network for Unity (RNU) notes with increasing concern, the growing practice of what can only be described as extortionism, being carried out by private landlords within working class nationalist areas and beyond. When observing average rents, it is clear that private landlords here are exploiting historical housing shortages in order to demand amounts well above what is provided by housing benefit. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Today the NAMA To Nature group struck again. This time in Cherrywood industrial estate, Dublin near the Luas line. In an act of civil disobedience a group of 12 people in business suits started planted trees this morning at 7am on an area of wasteland beside the Luas track along the edges and ridges to help shield the eyesore from the nearby apartment block part of which is a ghost estate. Ireland has over 600 ghost estates and 40,000 empty dwellings. Rather than watch the government dither and procrastinate let's help nature take them back. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Former Minister for Defence Willie "The Kid" O Dea, today failed to answer questions put to him by the People's Association Watchdog in our weekly email to all TDs, Ministers and an Taoiseach, among the questions put to Wily Willie were "Will you stand up for the people or take the cushy favours of the financial industry? Are you afraid to stand up to the banking sector? Have you asked how much money they got to cover mortgages in the bailout? Are you willing to see the demise of your country when you can take a stand?".
The Banks Robbery of the People of Ireland appears to be going totally unchallenged by Willie, I wonder are his constituents ignored and disregarded in this manner by this "Gentleman".
Below is our latest (unedited) letter to the TDs Ministers and an Taoiseach and Willie O'Dea's unedited reply. read full story / add a comment

The People's Association Watchdog recently sent a letter to all TDs with a proposal regarding mortgage debt solutions, to our dismay one of the replies received was from Minister Howlin's Office to say "As this is a matter for the Mr. Michael Noonan T.D., Minister for Finance your email has been forwarded onto his Department for attention and direct reply."
Has Minister Howlin forgotten the Keane report already? He is minister for Public Expenditure and Equality and his department had the 2nd highest amount of participants in the Keane report.
It would appear that Minister Howlin is doing a Pontius Pilate and washing his hands of all the distressed mortgage holders that are being sacrificed at the behest of his banking masters. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Recently in the picturesque village of Ballynagore, Co Westmeath, the local Council at a cost of €40,000 took the decision to demolish 3 bungalows that where close to being fully constructed, in what is now purported to be the demolition of Ireland's first 'ghost estate.' The 3 bungalows had been left lying idle for quite some time and while there is confusion as to who the developer is, the neglected homes had quickly fallen victim to vandalism and had become somewhat of an eyesore to the residents of Ballynagore. read full story / add a comment
