"If Jesus Christ was alive today he would defend investigation with maternal [stem] cells" :- James Watson one of the discoverers of the double helix DNA molecule in a print interview published by the La Vanguardia in Spain yesterday. Makes me laugh. When exactly did Jesus die? Or rather didn't he die and go through the Resurrection? Isn't that why he's famous? Isn't he alive, still? out there somewhere, waiting to return and tell us all about stem cells, life support machines, exactly what sexual acts between consenting adults are ok? at what price a house may be sold? whether it was the right thing to invade iraq? & Today it is reported that the US congress have been debating changes to US law to allow stem cell research. Mr Bush believes Jesus lives, and he's not a scientist, he's a pharisee or saducee. & he's just lost his vote. read full story / add a comment

Urbana Champaign are probably one of the best organised Indymedia collectives in the global network. They recently raised enough money to buy their own premises - a 30,000 square foot post office. One of their volunteers Sascha Meinrath is also the co-ordinator of the Champaign-Urbana Community Wireless Network. In this interview with Amy Goodman, Sascha explains what the project is about, how viable it is and the problems they've encountered with large telcos who are lobbying US government - and succeeding - to have a legislative monopoly on the provision of information networks. read full story / add a comment

Looks like there are two (loosely speaking) May Day events, one organised by Labour Party, the other co-ordinated by Green councillor, Niall O Brolchain. This is how the sponsors are promoting their events (i) LABOUR'S MAY DAY: May Day commemorates past struggles to gain basic rights. In the present it emphasises the need for solidarity. May Day was first celebrated in Galway in 1919 and the Labour Party continues this tradition. This year the event will be celebrated at the Westwood House Hotel in Newcastle. The night will include a Race Night & Social. Emmet Stagg will be a special guest and Michael D. Higgins will be there, as will Mayor Catherine Connolly and councillors (ii) MAY DAY SPEAKER'S CORNER Speakers Corner in Galway will take place at 2.30pm on Sunday 1st May. The theme for this month will be Social Issues but in line with the philosophy of Speakers Corner, all topics may be spoken about. Join in at 2.30pm outside St. Nicholas church read full story / add a comment

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the entry into force of the Biological and Toxins Weapons Convention (BTWC) on 26 March 1975. The BTWC was the first Convention to ban an entire class of weapons of mass destruction, and is a key component of the international non-proliferation and disarmament framework. The European Union (EU) considers the BTWC to be the cornerstone of our efforts to prevent biological agents and toxins from ever being developed and used as weapons. read full story / add a comment

From znet Whole countries opposed it, its proponents couldn't explain it, and its own parliament called for it to be completely reconsidered. Twice. Therefore, the European Council decided to approve it. Barring an exceptional parliamentary earthquake, the Computer Implemented Inventions Directive will be rubber-stamped by the European Parliament and will in time become law across the Union. It seems Bill Gates got more than a regal tap on the shoulder when he was visiting last week: if these are the punishments for heading a company convicted in Europe and America for anti-trade monopoly abuse, let us hope he is never rewarded. read full story / add a comment

Once upon a time two doctors got together, and not content with talking to grannies and mammies all day, and offering advice to nurses, and parents with autistic children, decided to set up a drug company. The spoke fluent american and had friends in the progressive democrats, with proven links to supremacists organisations in the US. The only vaguely democratic institution in the EU, the european parliament, has repeatedly and firmly rejected software patents (or "computer implemented inventions" in Newspeak). But the European Commission and Council, spurred on by none other than our old pal McGreevy, is still trying to introduce a new law that would hand the european software industry to multinationals, mainly Microsoft and IBM, on a plate, in a sickening little "What's good for Microsoft is good for Ireland" show. read full story / add a comment
