J19: 'Indignants' to protest EU Pact in Dublin, Cork, Galway and LimerickThey don't represent us! Rights are won, not given! We are not commodities! It is not a crisis, it is a con! If you take our future, we will take the city! We are the children of comfort but we will not be parents of conformity!
Sunday June 19th will see Europe-wide protests against the forthcoming ratification of the Euro Pact. As part of this international mobilisation, Real Democracy Now! Ireland have organised demonstrations around the country. Simultaneous protests will take place at 4pm at the following locations:
The Irish demonstrations are a response to a call from Spain’s Real Democracy Now! movement for a co-ordinated European response on the 19th June to the upcoming ratification of this Pact. The event planners hope that by combining public protest and public assembly, everyone present at the events will have a chance to speak, express their grievances, and take collective decisions on further actions against the imposition of austerity across Europe. The organizers want the protest to be peaceful and relaxed and are asking those attending to respect four rules:
1. No political party or trade union banners The organizers have expressed frustration with the “political establishment”. “We have no faith in the politicians”, said Maria, “we want to reinvent democracy, bring it to the streets and create an assembly where everyone can represent themselves; because the politicians don’t represent us”. A key element of the Euro Pact, the European Stability Mechanism, is to be signed off by EU Governments at the end of June. But the pact also includes measures of fiscal, wage and public service 'reform' for all member states. According to the European Council, these measures are aimed at achieving greater 'competitiveness' and 'flexibility', as well as 'fiscal and financial responsibility'. However the organisers maintain that the Pact will be harmful for the vast majority of people across Europe, and that its measures will guarantee (i) the continuation of disastrous ‘adjustment’ policies, through the European Stability Mechanism, (ii) More cuts in the public sector, (iii) Higher unemployment, (iv) Lower wages, (v) Longer working hours and ‘flexibility’ of contracts and (vi) the further curtailment of workers’ rights. “The Euro Pact will copperfasten the way the crisis is already being managed”, according to Maria, a participant in preparations for the Irish Real Democracy Now! events, “it will mean more austerity, attacks on working conditions and the undermining of public services.” Real Democracy Now! Irish Facebook Event Pages: Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway A list of some of the other cities in Europe taking part in the J19 mobilisation is available in the 'more info' section of this Facebook event page (if you hit the 'see more' link).

On the 23rd of July, 6 walking groups from various destinations in the Spanish state (the first leaving Valencia today) will converge on Madrid which helpfully for this sort of thing is in the centre of the Iberian peninsula which alas also explains why one of the aims, in this state at least, is to move ""Madrid"" somewhere else. Of course global people have to think about whether moving ""Madrid"" is as important as moving some other ""node of state/corporative non-democratic power"" from where it unhelpfully is now to where it really would serve humanity best.....we might even discover in the distant future that we don 't need these dodgy constructs after all & we've been wasting so much poverty & misery on unsustainability all along. This might prove difficult for us all to admit at first because we don't like admitting that we kind of got things wrong before. But Of course the people of ""Madrid"" (or wherever you the global people decide your equivalent of ""Madrid"" is) - will even then be a better place for the people who live there now and we want to live in the future.

People of Europe Rise Up: The call from Greece
People of Europe Rise Up: The initial response from Ireland
So despite having lost Economic Independance, despite 1000 people a week having to leave the country, despite so much (mostly late at night barstool) mutterings of "The countries fucked... bla bla bla" when push comes to shove, it looks like the rise of INDIGNATION has still not hit the fair little green isle...
Its not like people didnt know, they did. Its not like there isnt plenty of people who are trying to change things, there are. What is it then? Why are the IRISH still asleep, why will they not wake up? What will it take to wake them up?
Sundays international day of action (In my city, Barcelona a quarter of a million people took to the streets) was responded to in the 4 corners of Ireland by only 200 people (mainly spanish and greek???) in Dublin, 40 (mainly spanish and greek???) in Cork and with no written reports yet, we get a response from Limerick "Just 10 in Limerick, but not bad for a first time event I think" and still waiting to hear from Galway.
BUT, its not that Irish people cant take to the streets, the day before in Dublin: 3,567 people dressed-up as Wally from 'Where's Wally?...
I dont know, has anything changed in Ireland. I left it in 2006, partly, due to this (aswell as to learn stuff elsewhere). Then the crisis came and it seemed Irish people were starting to wake up, but no. It still looks like the country is dozing. Im INDIGNANT at how this world is being destroyed, Im INDIGNANT at how the international world of capitalism is able (through people not doing anything) to keep on destroying so much of the planet and normal peoples lives BUT Im also INDIGNANT at the, seemingly, absolute lack of drive from the Irish people to RECLAIM their/ our country.
Anyways, I wont go on, ye have heard it all before...

19J the day that 15M opened the eyes of the world (but need to work a fair bit more to open the eyes of Ireland)
The problems are different but do feel free to take the piss of your fellows whilst exhaling adrenalin.
Ireland is different because unfortunately most of the protesting against the direction Europe is taken is being organised by groups that largely represent the protected sectors. Those who are hit hardest have no real representation, as a result why should they support these protests?
In fairness, if you were a former employee of a non union private sector workplace being asked to come out and show "solidarity" with front line workers etc, would you? Why would you? After all, these guys still have work while you have nothing. The "solidarity" is not being shown back in kind. You've been left behind, so why bother backing people who are still way better off than you?
* Spain is NOT Ireland, your right, but they are both PIGGYs and both in the shit. Yes theres differences, but there is always differences, no matter how you cut it: Leinster is not Munster, Dublin is not Clare... ok
We all are living on this little planet, which in case you hadnt noticed, is being quickly fucked up beyond belief (read John Vidals 'global weirding' article at http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jun/13/extreme-wea...fires ) and, probably, will end up making life unbearable for most if not all humans...
Anyways, above is not taking the piss, it is a constructive attempt to communicate to Irish people what is going on in the hope that indeed they do get INDIGNANT, maybe first at me for hitting a soft spot "Irish pride" (ive felt it and know it from seeing how "irish" are treated different to "english" in Iran, Pakistan and beyond), then maybe the situation that they are in. That is the first step, next step is to think "f*ck it, Spain are not taking it anymore, why are we???" (is that happening yet? NO, 256 people (more or less) took to the irish streets for the J19 call - in fairness, that bollox, IMHO)
Well aware of whats going on up north, I know it, have friends there, regularly visit when home. Oddly enough, before the J19 demo in Barcelona, the only fellow around the table who had been there, bar myself and maybe 1 other lad, was the Catalan Gaelic football player. All the GAA lads and mates from most other parts had never ventured up (another normal enough stat, if you ask about)
* Spain is NOT Ireland, a simple fact is that here in Spain, dancing, singing, rhythym is in their blood and everywhere in the culture, interesting to see how badly the paddies, myself included, dance along with the spanish. We're different and the same, as you and I are different and the same.
So, sin é, a chara. By the way, were you on the streets for J19? what constructive criticism can you offer on how to build this movement in Ireland so that the people in ireland once again feel as we do here and now in spain "We can win this and we WILL win this! WE ARE WINNING"

19 de junio de 2011 - and indignant
in response to Dunk.
Some Irish people came out to the Spire to support the Spanish community who were standing in solidarity with their
friends and families in Madrid, Catlunya and other centres. Some Irish political groups went to monitor and meet with
the protestors (you may have mentioned above that Allen was there, amongst others).
essentially the protest that you compared to the 'wally-day' was not a failure as one supposes that conversations
occurred , however, the deep level of betrayal and anger felt here and the shock that this country is in is not going
to manifest for your convenience a mass-movement for a few reasons :
* A grass-root mass movement of protest will be lead from beneath, and by those people whose governments
have betrayed them at the deepest level, that is something that cannot manifest (or occur) because it'd be
really cool to have everything all neatly timed and working in concert with other PIIGs countries. life is not
so convenient- i am sorry.
* failed political leadership, the irish national character is ambitious and thinks that the gaining of power
absolves them from reaching out to and translating need. This can be seen in the amount of angry young
(mostly men) who have either joined the Dáil/ the Times/ the Village or sought lectureships in our colleges.
These provide convenient indoctrinating platforms for their pet causes and their ability to spot other angry
types and encourage them on. The exercise is an impotence and has only succeeded in theoretical politics
which aren't (like our political parties) interested in poverty issues or indeed in equality- they will continue to
fail whilst drawing salaries and building houses (sad but true).
* Irish people have experienced at least three years of betrayal, lies and watching parties refuse to engage
with poverty and alienation, I reckon that this equals to flare-ups, violence and urban war-fare tactics, which
is why citizens forums are popping up. : Politicians know and recognise their level of sick betrayals and wish
to have a fighting chance to retain power, so they set up talking shops (one recently produced a senator) in
much the same fashion as FF appointed boards etcetera.
I (living here) have much hope for women to protest but unfortunately both the Dáil and its pretend opposition
are too bound-up in their pretty words, theoretical politics and self-appointed talking shops to understand that
they have consistently alienated a huge sector of society , which having responsibility for the young and first
hit by poverty will be the first to strike here.
So Dunk, have a happy and wonderful postcardy time in BCN but please do not take the piss out of
the Irish wallies when the pace of change here occurs in entirely different political and economic circumstances
to those that you are immersed in. + please understand that you are living in another country and thus have
no right (really) to expect that everyone is living in the same manner and circumstances as your good self.
I found the wallies amusing enough and the protestors nice and friendly.
