Shell Office Blockaded for 6 Hours

Campaigners prevent anyone from entering the Shell offices in Belmullet

At 7:30am on Monday 4 July, about 17 campaigners arrived to the Shell office building in Belmullet to block the Shell workers from getting in. This was done remind the office employees that they are implicated in the ongoing Corrib Gas Conflict, and to stop them having meetings or doing any work at the office today.

The protest was successful in closing the office for the day, and helping to put pressure on Shell during this critical time leading up to the commencing of work in Aughoose. Shell have announced that they plan to start work imminently. This means they will be extending and securing their compound in Aughoose before attempting to remove approx 175,000 tonnes of indispensable peat. This comes at a time when ordinary people are being banned from cutting turf, while Shell is allowed to remove this much peat right next to a special area of conservation. This shows as we've seen time and again in Mayo, there's one law for Shell and another for everyone else.

Come up to Mayo and join the resistance!

There will be a mass day of action the following Friday after Shell starts work on the next stage. We expect this will happen in the next couple of weeks. Keep checking the website.

But don't wait for the mass day of action! There are actions happening all the time, work on camp and plenty of plotting and planning to be done.

As well as all that we're having a community bike ride and picnic on 17th July 1pm.

Or what about coming up for the next Direct Action Training weekend 23rd July (10-5) to learn about your legal rights and share various skills and knowledge that might come in handy when taking on one of the biggest corporations in the world.

In memory of Simon Levin.
