Marvellous news from NI: The ban approved on the descpicably cruel so-called "sport" of live hare coursing by the Assembly last autumn comes into effect from today. Thus ends forever in that part of Ireland this sick practise. It involves the capture of hares by gangs of net men, their confinement first in little boxes and then in wired off enclosures, and the terrifying ordeal of being hounded for fun and a laugh on coursing day. Campaigners in the Republic will take comfort and encouragement from this development. We'll press on with our campaign until hare coursing has been relegated to the dustbin of history. Already, the coursing clubs are lashing out at the decision to end the terrorizing of gentle hares up north, backed by an internet hate site that continues to attack anyone who as much as whispers a word against hare baiting. Let's hope too that Sinn Fein will revert to its anti-hare coursing stance at its upcoming Ard Fheis on September 9th/10th in Belfast.
