A rare screening of Almodovar comedy "Dark Habits" (1983)

category dublin | arts and media | event notice author Wednesday October 12, 2011 11:15author by Film Qlubauthor email filmqlub at gmail dot com Report this post to the editors

The craziest mad-cap comedy ever directed by Almodovar (and that’s saying something!)

This screening will launch the second season of the Dublin Film Qlub, a not-for-profit group which screens one film of interest to the LGBTQ community once a month in Dublin. Season Two, "Around the World in the 80s", will present rarely seen but fantastic films from the 1980s, especially chosen from ten different countries. We start with...

ENTRE TINIEBLAS
(tr. DARK HABITS)
Dir. Pedro Almodovar. 1983, 114 min. Spanish, with English subtitles.
Script: Pedro Almodovar
Starring: Cristina Sánchez Pascual, Julieta Serrano, Marisa Paredes, Carmen Maura, Chus Lampreave

The film opens with a homage to the unsung lesbian classic All About Eve, when the number-one fan of cabaret singer Yolanda comes backstage to get an autograph. The fan is the Mother Superior in a Madrid convent devoted to fallen women, who in penance adopt humiliating names – from the charming Sor Manure to the delightful Sor Sewage Rat. When Yolanda gets into a scramble with local drug-dealers, she uses the convent as a hideout. As it turns out, she is not the only one there with a criminal past, and she is not the first pretty young woman ‘rescued’ by Mother Superior. Everyone in the convent has a secret (or two), and the addition of Yolanda into the mix brings the sisters to boiling point. The amazing cast, including some of the best actresses in Spain, treat these insane characters with the utmost respect, and the result is, strangely enough, more sweet than it is blasphemous.
