New County Wexford Chairman of Sinn Féin: 'No' to "Permanent Austerity Treaty"

category wexford | eu | press release author Wednesday April 25, 2012 10:51author by Oisín Ó Conail - Wexford Sinn Féinauthor address New Ross, Co. Wexfordauthor phone 086-2397192 Report this post to the editors

The new County Chairman of Wexford Sinn Féin has called for a no vote to the so-called "Fiscal Compact" Treaty in the upcoming referendum - (formally, the intergovernmental Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union). Oisín Ó Conail, a farmer and recent economics graduate from Foulkesmill, was elected the new Chairperson of Sinn Féin in County Wexford, at a Comhairle Ceantar meeting in Enniscorthy last Tuesday night. Mr Ó Conail said his first duty would be to help lead the County Wexford campaign of opposition to what he terms ‘the Permanent Austerity Treaty’.

The Permanent Austerity Treaty is a cookbook; and your jobs, your businesses, and your livelihoods are what's on the menu. This is economic cannibalism on a national scale. It formalises us as a generational debt-servicing machine. Solely to protect the financial fictions of the European monetary and banking system. To bailout the same European system for the problems it caused by a 'one-size-fits-Germany' monetary union.

Millions for water meters, when the same money could fix the pipes that leak most of the water. Septic Tank schemes to squeeze rural dwellers who already pay for their own infrastructure. Household charges when people already pay whopping charges to build their houses. More of this on the way. Where is it going? What is it for? That giant sucking sound is the economic lifeblood being drained from this country in the form of emigration of surplus people, credit contraction, job and demand destruction. Our collective life is being being transformed into a giant toll-booth to save and serve a continental plutonomy. To quote the poem: 'Will German, French or Dutch inscribe the epitaph of Emmet, When we've sold enough of Ireland, to be but strangers in it?'

Recently, even leading pro-government economists like Colm McCarthy have derided the economics of this treaty. It has been well publicised that the introduction of the 0.5% structural deficit rule will cost the state an extra €6 billion. Even if the Fine Gael/Labour government reaches its target of a 3% deficit by 2015, we will still have to remove a further €6 billion from our economy at that point. That and other measures will fuel an economic implosion which this state will struggle to ever escape.

Sinn Féin wants people to educate themselves on this treaty. The full text is only eleven pages long and available to read free online - with explanations - at www.AusterityTreaty.com. To inform the public of the dangers posed, Wexford Sinn Féin, is launching the Austerity Treaty Road-show. In the coming weeks we will visit communities across the county campaigning for a no vote to the Permanent Austerity Treaty. If you wish to help the campaign against the Austerity Treaty in your area of Wexford, text join to 086-2397192

That giant sucking sound is a huge mass of Labour voters being hoovered up by the Sinn Fein and independents camp as Labour's opinion poll numbers plummet.

No wonder! Sinn fein are the only party left that look like they might stand up to the eurocrats on this treaty and all the other austerity measures attacking the living standards of the poor and reducing them by an estimated 26% while those of the top 5% INCREASE by 8%

This insane permanent austerity treaty will finish Labour for years. Rightly so. Good post. VOTE NO!

..once again become the pink condom on the blue flute of FG riding us roughshod up the (E)S&M bondage valley of debt.

Half a league, half a league, half a league onwards
CAP in hand they steal the land
By stealth from Nice to Lisbon
Spinning out the barbed-wire lies
They fence your children outwards

From fishing stocks to corporate sharks
All to the heart of Europe
Beneath Swiss Alps they store the scalps
Of others screwed before us.

A wee nursery rhyme for the times that are in it.

Feel free to edit and adapt(it may be the last whiff of freedom we get before the grapeshot).

Sinn féin may claim to be opposed to austerity, so why then are they implementing austerity against hundreds of thousands of people in the North?

would sinn féin care to comment on this?

The situation in those 6 counties is similar to what it will be in the other 26 if we allow the Austerity Treaty proper (the vehicle), as well as the ESM funding treaty (the fuel); Ireland north and south will be reduced to essentially administering only those funds we are so granted leave to by institutions and powers outside the island.
As I understand it, SF in the 6 has done it's best to manage the money actually available to it despite the cuts enforced from outside the country. This is why the sovereign powers of a nation - currency, taxation, budgets, deficits and so on, are so vital in remaining under the control of the people most effected by them.
You should consider the limitation on choices that have been forced on the North from outside, indicative of those that will be forced on the rest of the country if we allow these treaties to pass.

No, Oisin, you should 'consider the limitation on choices that have been forced on the North from outside' its called British Imperialism, which your party is complicit with. Occupiers/imperialists always need local collaborators, and in this case its sinn fein.
Not only is sinn fein party to Austerity but it administers a statlet that tortures and Interns people. these are the facts. Can you dispute these facts? be my guest.

My last line wasn't clear: you should consider the remnant of the British Empire's continuing limitations put on the North _to_be_indicative_of_ what will happen to he rest of the country on a perennial basis. I am presuming you would think that is a bad/worse situation than even what happens now - & that is the actual topic of this particular article.
