IAWM CONDEMNS MASSACRE OF CIVILIANS AND IMPOSITION OF STATE OF EMERGENCY BY EGYPTIAN MILITARY

• SOLIDARITY PROTEST WITH PEOPLE OF EGYPT THIS SATURDAY 2PM AT EGYPTIAN EMBASSY, 12 CLYDE ROAD, BALLSBRIDGE, DUBLIN 4.

• CALLS FOR IRISH GOVERNMENT TO CONDEMN EGYPTIAN MILITARY

The Irish Anti-war Movement (IAWM) issued a statement today condemning the massacre of at least 600 civilians including many women and children by the Egyptian military and called for a solidarity protest this Saturday at the Egyptian Embassy, 12 Clyde Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.

The statement noted that this is the third massacre of civilians by the Egyptian military since the military overthrow of the elected Government of Mohammed Morsi following massive popular protests last month. Despite the anti democratic and authoritarian nature of the Morsi led Muslim Brotherhood Government these horrific acts by the Egyptian military have nothing to do with restoring democracy. It is instead about stamping down dissent, sending a message to all protesters and asserting its undemocratic control over the populace.

The statement noted deep concern at the manner of these attacks, the ferocity of the killings (with many people reported as being shot in the head by snipers) and the precedent they set for possible future acts by the military against anybody who wishes to protest.

Jim Roche, PRO of the IAWM said:

“This latest atrocity by the Egyptian military against peaceful, unarmed civilians who were simply exercising their right to protest is shocking, unacceptable and must be condemned. Whatever about the unprecedented, massive, popular protests that led to the military intervention to depose the authoritarian Morsi Government that was clearly deeply unpopular with many Egyptians, this latest bloody massacre of MB supporters and some foreign media operatives, is a deep infringement of basic human rights that will serve only to polarise Egyptian society and to deepen sectarian tensions as we are seeing already with the attacks on Coptic Churches today. Whatever the Egyptian masses, who protested in their millions against the Morsi Government last month wanted, it is clearly not this indiscriminate shedding of Egyptian blood on the streets of Cairo.”

He continued:

“It is clear that the Egyptian military is not interested in a genuine democratic process and is in fact creating a deeply dangerous situation. The military is intrinsically linked to the old regime, controls at least 40% of the wealth in Egypt and has not got the interests of the Egyptian people at heart. Though we may have ideological differences with MB supporters we express our deep solidarity with those protesters slain in such a brutal fashion today. We can only hope that the Egyptian people will protest against this atrocity and somehow unite in their calls for an inclusive democratic process that can once again unite the country against dictatorship”
