Thirty Left-wing MPs have written to Ofcom to press it to censor X under the Online Safety Act. The evidence of 'hate' on the platform is threadbare, but it's obvious why they want to clip its wings, says Laurie Wastell.

Come on Indymedia!

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday September 04, 2002 12:46author by Deirdre B Report this post to the editors

Come on guys - I know there's trouble getting a team together and I know everyone is really busy BUT BUT BUT: You guys need to change the frontpage every so often. Surely this only takes 10 minutes once every few days. You could do it like http://www.portland.indymedia.org/ or http://eugene.indymedia.org/ and have severeal features on the go at once. Also I think alot of people come on to the site and don't even realise the newswire is here. I feel alot of us net-aware activists have been using the net along time and feel everyone should know and does know how to read 'open publishing' and how to publish. A little bit more fool proof would open IMC to a much broader audience, other than expert internet users and already aware activists. Otherwise you're preaching to the converted! BUT WE NEED **NICE TREATY***SHANNON DEMO***BELFAST RIOTS*** frontpage NOW! NOW! NOW!!!

And presumably, if sth doesn't make it as a feature, it could still , with a bit of tweaking, be a newswire article anyway...

stop spamming the newswire with non-irish news.west papua is not relavent to irish indymedia. (joke)

...features are not simply articles lifted from the newswire, but short pieces that introduce, summarise, and link to several posts from the newswire. Someone from the editorial collective could explain a little more perhaps.

The problem with calling for more features, or calling for indymedia to chase campaigns looking for features, is that it involves more work for a small group of people that are already overstretched.

If you want more features then you should -
1) Join the main and editorial mailing lists
2) Ask someone who has already written a feature to give you some pointers (length, use of HTML, that kind of thing)
3) Identify a subject you think is deserving of a feature article
4) Write it yourself

I don't think there are any guarantees that new features will be published, but everyone likes new features so a half decent one has got a good chance.

(And yeah, this is something else to bring up at a meeting - drawing up simple guidelines for feature writers and explaining the processes involved)

Hi Ray. I think there are plenty of good newswire items that can be used as 'features'. If someone writes a piece specifically for the features, how does he or she know it will get published?

I suggest the editorial crew take the 'pics of the week' from the newswire or invite reps from the different campaigns to submit a feature. If they don't, they lose their spot and someone else has the feature.

The shit's hitting the fan in West Papua right now - East Timor style - and the Irish campaigns are proving vital in exposing this around the world. The Irish govt. is also complicit in agreeing to the whitewash UN vote of 1969 which legalised the Indonesian occupation. OF course a 'feature' could be written on this, but are there guarantees? what is the policy?

If you want a more rapid changeover of features then join the mailing lists and help write the new features. Don't complain that someone else isn't writing the things you want to see - write them yourself.

Well, I hope to make it to the Saturday Indy meeting and help out in the future.

Perhaps others will come to?
