with e-voting, fraud will be much easier - fewer people to bribe.
it's a dutch company called nedap who will make the irish machines. they also make cattle tagging systems.

A further problem with electronic voting, there is no 'paper' trail and
at any stage bogus data can be entered or votes dropped out. The software
engineer has full control to do whatever they look, including put in 'trap-doors'
to turn on all sorts of non-standard behaviour. Rather like in the manner that
'cheats' are used in most games. 'Cheats' are used because they are very handy to
have when the games are being written and the programmer wants to quickly jump to
a particular scenario in a game to test something.
At a minimum e-voting software should be at least Open Source code and mechanisms
should be in place to show it has not been tampered with.
For those not in the know, most of the 'free' software on the Internet, such
as Netscape browser, Linux operating system and many computer programming languages
are Open Source, which means anyone can download the code and look at it.
This way everyone gets to see exactly what is there. However that alone would not be sufficient,
and as stated above, much more stringent checks and balances would need to be in place, with
everything open to inspection but anyone else. None of this secrecy shit!

No, that was the Florida courts mentioned in the opening article. I'm afraid I don't have the link, its something I was reading about last week. I'm sure if you read up on all the problems there were with the latest elections in Florida you'll find some references to the court judgement.
