The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

Thank Lockdowns for the Worst Budget in History Sat Nov 22, 2025 13:00 | Will Jones
We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

Taxpayers Are Charged for the BBC Whether They Like it or Not Sat Nov 22, 2025 11:00 | Charlotte Gill
It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Explain yourself.
In the Dublin South East constituency the largest chunk of Áine Ní Chonnaill's (Openly racist independent candidate) transfers went to Aonghus O Snodaigh of SF. The SF leadership may not be racist and the vast majority of its memebrship isn't either, but this does show that SF by playing the nationalist card at every oppurtunity does get some support from biggots. SF should adopt a clear anti racist programme calling for jobs and homes for all regardless of race or state of the economy. But will they do this? I wouldn't hold my breath...
The point is that the person putting up the posters is trying to draw locals away from SF by claiming that they support the so-called 'Black Invasion', etc.
There have been racist stickers in the Inchicore area before.
As Ray said, leave them up :) I take it as a compliment.
At least IMC Poster admits we're not a racist party. As for the transfer thing, anyone who thinks that transfers are based only on ideology might need more experience in electoral politics. The SWP transfers more to us than anyone else. We've received transfers from southern unionist candidates. This doesn't mean an ideological common ground, but often relates to issues like candidate gender, geography, the order the candidates appear on the ballot paper etc.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that every single person who votes SF is not a racist. No party can say that, but simply because some-one votes for you or transfers to you doesn't mean ideological sympathy. Transfers are funny old things.
As for you remark about not holding your breath, no need, we've already done so. you don't even need to inhale. In fact we were the only political party to raise the fact the issue of the lack of support for asylum seekers in the Budget.
Yes transfers are funny things but, Áine Ní Chonnaill did not come from the area so had no real base of support. She was of a different gender to Aonghus. She did not run on any other issue other than racism. Her vote was plain and simple a racist vote.
Transfers do come from all over, unionists will transfer to SF, PDs to the SP etc but there is a general pattern in transfers. People do not transfer randomly, they do transfer to the candidate that is closest in ideology to their no.1 choice. In the case of Ní Chonnaill heavily transfering to SF, this does show that most of the racist voters do believe that SF is the closest party to them.
Yeah but most of her leaflets were dropped in Ballyfermot which is Aengus' base. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are people who transfer to SF because they think we're racists in the closet but all I can do is say we're not, point to our record on asylum seekers, refugees, racism etc. and make the point that if they have such an opinion it's not based on our policies.
has just shown you again that
THERE ARE FASCISTS AND RACISTS IN INCHICORE.
would it be stretching the point to surmise
THERE ARE FASCISTS AND RACISTS IN IRELAND?
no.
It has long been the anaylsis of the 5th international of global anarchists
that Ireland is
A CRYPTO FASCIST and RACIST
country.
administered in two states.
that is why we suggest a anti-fascist section in any improved imc ireland layout.
These postings get lost on the newswire.
Keep it up AFA!
Out of Ni Chonaill 960 votes, O' Snodaigh (SF) got just over 20%, but then again the labour party got 15% which makes no sense either. Better again in this constituency, 42 people voted either Socialist Workers Party or Stickies and then proceeded to give their number 2 to Ni Chonaill!! And it wasn't only here that strange results cropped up. In Cork North Central Mick Barry ran for Socialist Party and was eliminated with 1000 votes. One of the main planks of his campaign was to vote against the racist bile being spouted by Noel O Flynn and Joe O Callaghan. What happens when he is eliminated? O Callaghan gets 100 and o Flynn gets over 50. So when it comes to transfers and in particular paltry numbers like Ni Chonaill ( only 2% of overall poll) I think you can't gleam much except that some people obviously vote with their eyes closed.
look in the real world a very bloody war is about to be launched. This infantile nonsense about posters is a diversion. What is more interesting is who is really behind this and why right now?
The world and other political issues do not stop just because the US decides to go to war. The realiy is that the lives of 99.99% of people in confortable little Ireland will not be changed by the US bombing Iraq.
I'm not saying this is right of course - people should be concerned and active against the war - but it does not mean that all other campaigns and issues are dropped.
If you look at the original post all we were asking is that if anyone had any info at all about the posters to please let us know.
lots of campiagns get lost down the newswire.
In times of extra interest in Shannon readers don´t look at other stuff.
Then only small groups get to know.
To grow these campaigns which are as much based on the idea of thinking globally acting locally as any other these campaigns need support and new people to know participate, engage, debate solutions and tactics.
If these areas of concern go into sections then the newswire stays active for the weeks interest.
Sectioned articles go together.
They appear less often.
More readers.
more suport.
more learning.
more results.
It also protects against spam which goes onto newswire.

Once again, someone has come up with the devastating satirical ploy of pretending to be me. This fiendish parodist has left me wanting to laugh at the sheer unbridled wit of it all, but at the same time I've been shamed into silence by the exposure of my wrong-headed ideas.
A hit, a palpable hit!
