The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Tony Bliar speaks. Listen!

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday January 22, 2003 11:04author by deppauthor email dep1 at eircom dot net Report this post to the editors

Tony Bliar

Bliar said yesterday - : "The most frightening thing is the coming together of fanaticism and the technology capable of delivering mass destruction and mass death."

Yeah, that’s what frightens us all, and YOU and Son Of A Bush are the fanatics.
The statement has two parts – fanatics (chaos!), and technology developing these weapons. Why not tackle both parts Bliar? Why are ye developing more and more weapons yourselves, eh? Why do ye want them? Why is it ok for ye to have them and not others? Why do ye provide them to your flavour of the month allies? To hold up the planet in order to siphon off it’s wealth for your own use maybe?
Why not disarm the nuclear/ chemical/ biolological weapons world-wide? Because you and your friends the US would lose your power? Maybe ye are just plain mad (seriously)? With WMD ye keep a gun to the head of all nations on earth.
Why, Bliar, do you follow everything the US does? ‘We share the same values’.
Oh, the values of extreme capitalism, exploitation, inequality, poverty, sham democracy, imperialism, pollution, greed, fear, jealousy, paranoia, power, war.

P.S. Is February 15th too late for the big demo? There is a push on against war TODAY, with opinion polls, newspaper articles, French & German announcements, etc. I am convinced there will be war, but let’s make it as difficult as possible for the war mongers.

Also..., is there evidence (polls etc.) that the people are resisting the mass media spin of the elites, and opposing the war in ever greater numbers? Is there actually some hope here of a public that likes to think a little? Will it all evaporate once/if the bombing starts? Can the Anti War MOvement develop on into an Anti System Movement, anti the system that causes these wars?

The growing popular opinion among the wider public seems to be - the war is about oil, Bush is a war monger, Bliar is a poodle of Bush.

The public are worried about the war.

If the war never happens, or when it's over, and when Bush/Bliar are no longer in power ..... I'd have to doubt that public opinion will turn on the system that put these 'leaders' in power in the first place.
Will the new white faces of the same old system parade down the streets to thousands of happy trusting admirers?
The new leaders will get the benefit of the doubt until they are shamed like these two, but .... the system, snd the scheming faceless elites behind the scenes will suffer little damage I fear?
Worryingly, I think the only way Bush can regain his licence to kill mandate is if some other WTC style attack happens soon - most likely in Europe this time.

On the plus side, at least one breakthrough has been made in the mass media linking a war to economics. Maybe it will be harder for these mongers to wage any war in the near future as a result.
To turn the media anti-war will have been some achievement compared to this time last year.

Other areas the new 'people friendly' media can then turn to are - exploitation, equality, the environment, and, oh, the little matter of us in the west living in sham demockracies.

The question for many of us in the anti War movement which traces common history for the last decade with the anti-globalised-capitalist movement is this time,
this time,
will the others realise that the anti-War movement doesn´t just convene for the current War on TV.

This system is based on war economics.
