Don't be silly. It's not surveillance it's the same data that every site on the web produces (less, in fact, because I'm sure you know that we could log individual IPs and link them to particular pages but DON'T). And because this site isn't the tool of one or two people, but a communal resource, run collectively, that data is shared with all users. To suggest that this is putting anyone's job in danger is laughable.

So now we can all see here that Indymedia is carrying our surveillance on who connects to their site. WOW!!! And they have the neck to criticise the USA. Brendan O'Connor get your pen out ... the public need to know how devious and sinister the Indymedia controllers are. So the guys in Intel having a quick look at your site could loose their jobs when you inform. That's really clever of you.

Suppose I shouldn't be surprised, never ever trusted Indymedia.

I like Americans. I just think the USA is stupid.
I held crying americans in my arms in the aftermath of Sept11. I welcomed americans to Barcelona and Europe after the Bush election. Americans of good conscience who had begun to think that they could suffer life in the USA no longer.
The USA is a failure. Its failure is all the greatest when one considers the genius and potential inherent in its peoples.

and now as is usual I go to great lengths like when Im trying my very best to be nice to the SWM, when I say
"I went to bed with an american once".
it was Feb last year. She was returning to the States after doing a stint of Aid work in Senegal.
She thought the USA was "misguided" which is just an intelligent way of saying "the USA is fucking stupid".

In order for every computer to access the internet, it need an address. This is a sequence of numbers that help identify the computer. Now if you use the internet at home your ISP (Eircom or IOL etc) give your computer this number automaticaly however some business who may have a need for a machine to be on line all the time use what is know as a dedicated IP. This means their address does not change. The indymedia servers IP is 66.39.75.250, so if you type http://66.39.75.250 you will still get to the indymedia website.

RIPE is a organisation that hands these out. Hence we can all lookup an ip (See the link above) and see who owns it. But that does not help us identify what the person looked at or who the person was. This is also a matter of public record.

Hope that helps the non techs and apoligies to the techs for being so basic.

It took the USA ovwer two months to understand the significance of the AlSamoud after maybe half of my usual readers in Indymedia Ireland had grasped it. The other half never understand what im saying but read it anyway thinking it will be a standard text someday after i get the nobel prize.,

but I think the USA is remarkably stupid.
I mean with all that money and high tech, even the advantage of confiscating through the paperclip project most of the NAZI tech as well, and they still havent ruled the world. How terribly stupid the USA is. There it is with the highest percentage of its population in prison, the highest illitarcy rate in the developed world, the highest AIDS rate in the developed world, the most expensive yet statistically most unreliable and dangerous space programme, the most deaths from TB, viral pneumonia and Pubonic Plague in the developed world and they still have Bush and havent managed to rule the world.

More TV than anyone else, yet how terribly stupid they are. Sorry but it is true. The USA is a disastrous failure. IT is an embarrasment to the other civilised nations. The greatest problems of the modern world all include US intransigence in their thornyness. Take out the USA from modern international relations and well you would cut out the big bad bully.

Take monopolies.
Only the americans would have allowed Microsoft to develop. How terribly stupid was that.

I was educated by Irish, Americans, British, French German and even Isreali tutors and teachers. I have worked with all nationalities and I must tell you the most stupid in general are the USA lot. I feel sympathy for these people with their sham democracy, their sham activism that raises a fifty eight year old woman with completely artifical teeth to near Goddess status jsut coz she sang against Vietnam. Christ are they stupid. IT is almost too late for the poor benighted fools to turn back the tide of hatred, apathy and revenge that have done nothing but prepare against themselves in fifty years of global hegomany.
They think they did a good job as world policeman, well they didnt they failed. utterly and completely. And it really saddens me that this stupid ignorant arrogant society that is the USA will probably never realise that it dug its own grave. IT didnt need Osama, it really surprises me that the stupid cretins thought to invent him.
anyway. tomorrow I will write to you all about what Aznar and Burlosconi hope to get from Bush for supporting his war on Iraq.

Just in case anyone else is going to go thru the numbers remember it's not always going to be accurate - people at home, for example, often don't have the same IP address each time because they are on dial-up (as opposed to work computers on a network which can be given a fixed address). Or students are using computers in labs so again there's no continuity.

One interesting thing I discovered from combining the referring pages and the popular pages is that some of the most popular pages are those mentioned in an article or forum post elsewhere. or the difference between those who use indymedia.ie and ireland.indymedia.org to come in. also the types of search terms that people use before they end up with us. For example there was 19 searches in Google news for "allah AND shuttle" that led the happy surfer to an Indymedia Ireland story - or that we get Babelfish-ed every now and again.

but I'm quite likely to be wrong on the tech end of it, not being much of an expert. anyone care to help me out or put me right?

Makes perfect sense, if you're not just trying to have a go at Iosaf (who is one of the better writers on this site..just look around the first few pages of the current wire).

We release our server statistics, included in that is the number of requests from particular domains - the Internet admin system is open so anyone can just type in the domain or the numerical version and get the contact details for the server. Instead of just releasing headline numbers like other websites do (i.e. 1,000,000 impressions this year! wow aren't you great) we allow users to interpret the data in their own way and draw their own conclusions. Extrapolating particular conclusions from combining different (publicly available, so there's no privacy breach - and it's all aggregate data so it's not as if you can find out where a particular article was written) is entertaining on a bored evening.
