The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

CIE workers down tools this Saturday in support of anti war demo

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Friday February 14, 2003 14:40author by CIE worker against the war - CIE workers against the war Report this post to the editors

Stoppage this Saturday

Just to confirm that many CIE workers will be participating in tomorrow's anti war demo in Dublin. Many of us (Myself included) will be walking off the job at 2pm tomorrow, so there will be some disruption to bus and rail services for a number of hours tomorrow afternoon. The level of disruption depends on the number of CIE workers who turn up tomorrow. Most bus and rail workers are strongly opposed to war against a war against Iraq under any circumstances, with or without any more UN resolutions. Of course there are some CIE workers, just like other workers who do support a war against Iraq, but they are definitely in the minority, certainly within CIE. We are also warning the management of any of the CIE companies - Dublin Bus, Irish Rail and Bus Eireann not to instigate any disciplinary action against any CIE workers who participate in tomorrow's

We are also warning the management of any of the CIE companies - Dublin Bus, Irish Rail and Bus Eireann not to instigate any disciplinary action against any CIE workers who participate in tomorrow's anti war rally, as tomoorow's march has the full support of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU), and also of the National Bus and Railworkers Union (NBRU), who are not part of ICTU. One final thing, because of the expected disruption to CIE services tomorrow afternoon, and because of the sheer number of people who'll be travelling into town for the demo tomorrow (figures of 20,000 to 30,000 are now being mentioned) via public transport, we very strongly urge you to come into town early tomorrow morning if you're travelling by public transport.

CIE workers against the war,
Friday 14/2/2003.

This is marvellous, the type of broad community action that meaningful movements are made of. Lets hope it will be a great day, and the beginning of a serious challenge to Bertie and his lapdogs

Great to hear hope that other people have the moral fibre to do the same.

I commend you all

Here to a brilliant day tomorrow, weather looks good too, dry and cold with sunny spells

Well done, CIE workers on taking a brave and principled stand. Withdrawal of one's labour is the most positive and encouraging method of direct action.

During the dark days of 300,000 unemployed and the supreme little rascal Haughey the workers of CIE were generally the most reliable at saying
"ya Basta!".
fair play to you all I reckon you have never been appreciated enough for your contribution to geniune Irish trade unionism.

This action is Typical of CIE any excuse to down tools.

CIE will look very well beside the greens and the socialist workers party pillars of society

Don't know how many of us will turn up tomorrow, but we are expecting a good turnout tomorrow. The unions (who are they?) for once did a great job, certainly here in the Poolbeg power plant in putting up posters and giving out leaflets advising all workers to attend tomorrow's anti war demo in Dublin. We actually seen our union reps for once. Pity they wouldn't put the same effort in for the rest of the year that they've done for tomorrow's demo. See you all tomorrow.

I think we will have an excellent demonstration tomorrow. We have got good media coverage over the past week, people are talking about the demonstration and most importantly workers are going to down tools.

The workers are the only people who can achieve an end to this war. In Ireland alone if the Unions were to take a militant stand against this war and call a general strike at the use of Shannon Airport, the right wing Fianna Fail/ PD govt and the political establishment wouldn't have a foot to stand on.

Im impressed at workers coming out against this war and I certainly hope to see more. Well done see you Saturday
