The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Only Shannon?

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday March 19, 2003 13:48author by Bernd Report this post to the editors

or: What was this thing flying over Dunboyne?

Strange plane spotted approaching Dublin Airport on March 18th - Dublin as a stop-over for US war effort?

Around 1730 GMT a strange plane was spotted over Dunboyne (Co. Meath), flying at extreme low level and apparently on course for Dublin Airport.

The plane seemed to be a C-130 Hercules transport plane, normally used for military operations. Colour was white all over, no markings visible. Experienced plane-spotters might have seen very similar planes in the US, usually used by civilian air transport providers to ferry material, people and "unknown cargo" to countries south of Mexico and on charter to US government institutions. Similar operations were performed by "Air America" during the Vietnam war ...

Are we right in assuming this was a part of the US war effort and that Dublin Airport is now being used in similar fashion to Shannon?

Or is there an innocent explanation?

The Americans are using Baldonnel for 'training' exercises. Maybe that was what the transport plane was about.

I've been saying about these activities for months now, and have endured an enormous amount of ridicule for my efforts.
Look around people, Ireland is being played like a piano by the warmongers, and the people don't know half the story.

Eh I wud just like to tank Sean and his frends for dere obviously very useful wurk keeping an eye on suspicious activities ....
As youse all know I have eh always been very supportive of de Neighbourhood Watch and dat sort of ting ...... I find it all very heartening dat people are taking de trubbel to go out of dere way to investigate dat kind of carry-on .....

But I tink dat we shud all wait for de eh results of an offical investigashun before we eh jump to enny hasty conclusions ..... udderwise we risk being a bit premature wich I tink is not in ennywans interest ......

Meself and de lads will be issuing an official statement later today or maybe even manyana when Brian Cowpat and de rest of de crew get back from dere holliers ....

In de meantime stay calm and it is sure to blow over very soon ..... and if eenywan duz spot any strange goings on report please make sure to report dem to your local garda station ......
