The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

Taxpayers Are Charged for the BBC Whether They Like it or Not Sat Nov 22, 2025 11:00 | Charlotte Gill
It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

hey folks,
I think there may already be some plans. There was a anti-nuke festival and celebration there in 2001 called carnvaha - see review below. For more details contact Senan at market@utvinternet.com
CARNVAHA
A series of concerts by various performers were held at various venues in the Wexford area as part of Carnvaha 2001 Festival. A review has been posted at the official Carnvaha 2001 Festival web site. Pól Brennan (former member of Clannad) and his band Dreambard performed on Sunday night, September 2nd, at The Sky and The Ground pub in Wexford. The concert included an impromptu guest performance by Liam O'Maonlai (from The Hothouse Flowers). Later in the week, Máire Brennan and her band performed with special guest Eleanor McEvoy at St. Iberius Church in Wexford town on Wednesday night, September 5th. The finale of this show was extra special with Pól Brennan and Liam O'Maonlai taking the stage with Máire in what a local person in the audience described as "the greatest musical experience of her life". The festival continues on Saturday, September 8th with additional concerts thoughout the day including Pól Brennan and his band Dreambard. A complete listing of performers is available at the official Carnvaha 2001 Festival web site. The official Carnvaha 2001 Festival web site will include pictures and video footage taken during the live events of the week on a special web page.
this is definitely as good a rallying oppurtunity as there could be, anti-nuke is anti-war and vice versa, anyone on the ground down there, and imagine if all the people who went there 25 years ago turned up again......

Mourning the Death of Irish Neutrality and All Deaths in Iraq
Next Sunday, 30th March will see a Dead Slow March for Peace taking place at Shannon Warport.(Meeting 2pm at the shopping centre). People will gather at Shannon from all over the country to express opposition to the war in Iraq and to Irish participation in it, through the use of facilities at Shannon by US military on their way to the Gulf.
This will be a solemn occasion, an act of mourning for all those who have been or will be killed in this war and for the final death of Irish Neutrality. Organisers are asking participants to wear black clothes, white face paint and to bring red paint or fake blood to put on their hands.
This protest has been called by the Grassroots Network Against War and is being supported by the Cork Peace Alliance.
