The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

RSF Ard Chomhairle join anti-war rally

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday March 29, 2003 21:32author by Ailin Report this post to the editors

The Republican Sinn Féin Ard Chomhairle which met today (Saturday, March 29) adjourned its meeting early so as to enable its members, led by Republican Sinn Féin President, Ruairí Ó Brádaigh to participate, behind the RSF banner, in the national 'Anti - War on Iraq' demonstration which took place in Dublin, assembling at the 'Garden of Remembrance'.

"We called on our members and supporters to join the national demonstration in Dublin on Saturday, to display our opposition both to this barbaric war of conquest, which is being waged against the people of Iraq in defiance of international law and the slavish attitude being adopted by the Dublin Government in allowing the continued use of Irish airspace and refuelling facilities at Shannon by US warplanes." RSF Assistant Publicity Officer, Des Dalton said.

Care to comment on the statement made at the rally? Namely that the US Ambassador was an invited guest at the Sinn Fein Ard Fheis?

Thanks to conservative Irish America and the Fianna Fail party, provisional Sinn Fein has been integrated fully into the Anglo-American imperial power structure. Gerry Adams is begging Bush's poodle for Sinn Fein to be allowed resume its administration of British rule in Ireland, in association with the retrograde Trimble, a war hawk. And they invite Bush's representative in Ireland to attend their Ard Fheis, as Bush's bombs massacre innocent Iraqis. They should no longer use the name Sinn Fein.

Why did RSF only have their Ard Comhairle at the demo? Apart from not having many other members that are not in a retirment home, could one of you please give a reason.

Why are RSF not involved in the IAWM? Why did you dress up in Volunteer uniform of 1916 and stand outside the GPO looking to save some ould building when there is a WAR taking place.

RSF belong to the past, you have no future. The dominant global issue is by far is the war on Iraq, and all you could think about is saving some dodgy building on Moore St for no apparent reason!

PS
Dressing up in military uniform and holding the national flag appears to me, and definitly any non-Irish people, as fascist.

"Why did RSF only have their Ard Comhairle at the demo?"

Read it again. The Ard Chomhairle finished early so it could participate behind the RSF banner with the other RSF members.

"Why did you dress up in Volunteer uniform of 1916 and stand outside the GPO looking to save some ould building"

That was the NGA not RSF. The NGA are a limited company and are not aligned to any political party.

"The dominant global issue is by far is the war on Iraq, and all you could think about is saving some dodgy building on Moore St for no apparent reason!"

The war in Iraq is the dominant global issue but it is not the only issue. Should we stop all other important political work every time there is a dominant global issue? The building at moore street was the one where the leaders of 1916 voted to surrender from. If it was saved it could be resfurbished and turned into a museum of the 1916 period. The council want to use the GPO instead but that wouldn't work as long as the GPO remains an active post office.

"Dressing up in military uniform and holding the national flag appears to me, and definitly any non-Irish people, as fascist."

Of course the first time the flag was seen widely it was flown by men in military uniform. RSF advocates a 32 county federal republic with maximum devolution to local level. I suggest you look up the meaning of the word fascist again.

Its sad that some people protest against imperialism abroad but ignore the same imperialism at home.

im not a fan of RSF at all really, but i was talking to the NGAers yesterday about 16 moore street and i think its terrible that the council want to knock it down.

i think yesterday was probably the best chance they would get to reach a lot of (possibly) sympathetic ears given that the demo was on.

if your complaining that 'theres a war on and they have nothing better to do than whinge about some old building" - if thats the case, then what you are in fact saying is that at anti-war demos people should only hand out leaflets about the war? thats bullshit. perhaps we should then be complaining about the RTSers who were handing out leaflets about the upcoming RTS on may bank holiday?

and as for calling them 'fascist' for dressing up, come on for fucks sake. its like calling a historical re-enactment society fascist!! i'm no fan of the tricolour, and i must say that i felt a surge of pride yesterday when the tricolour was burnt outside the Dail. a great moment that led me to hope that one day, nationality will be irrelevant.

save 16 moore street, its part of our history. turn it into a museum - give me a job there :)

If someone in any European city wore army gear and stood on the street with their national flag they would be seen to be fascists. I have lived in Germany, Sweden and briefly in Italy in my time. Fascists in those coutres act in that manner.

I have to add thought that RSF are not fascists. And I believe that the Moore Street site is of historical interest and should be preserved.
