The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Women's Symphony of Protest at Dail, Wednesday 9th at 7.30pm

Women's Protest at Dail. Make a Symphony of Noise at the Dail next Wednesday at 7.30pm. Bring pans and lids/spoons and make our opposition to the war heard by banging out a Symphony of Protest. Speakers and Singers and plenty of sound. Our empty pots will symbolize the food shortages Iraqi families have suffered particulary the children, as a result of sanctions and now the war. The sounds we will make are to symbolize the dreadful noise of bombs and explosions the people of Iraq have to live and die through. Let the Government hear us as Women opposing this barbaric war on Wednesday next.

Women’s Symphony of Protest at Dail

Wednesday 9th April at 7.30pm

We want to make our voices heard as women against the horror of the war against the people of Iraq

The protest is to symbolise the reality of daily life for women in Iraq who have suffered 12 years of sanctions and now the horror of bombs exploding while they struggle to get on with looking after their families.

In other cities around the world women have used pots and pans to show their opposition to this war. We know that every night in Barcelona women create a symphony of protest by banging pots for twenty minutes from10pm. We have heard that this is truly impressive.

We are asking women to bring pots and spoons or lids, the pots are to symbolize the effects of sanctions – empty food pots resulting from sanctions and now war and the noise will symbolize the horror and noise of bombing.

Come to the Dail on Wednesday and let our Government know that we want them to stop their support for this war.

many have lasted in the centre of the city till 3am.
The centre of the city has two encampments.
one in front of the Spanish Government delegation building.
the other on the square between City council and Catalan Government.

The City authorities seem to favour the cacerola over marches now, and as of two days are making overtures to increase social housing, ban the Spanish state (PP Aznar's party) from participation in the 2004 Forum in Barcelona.

This morning I overheard one of my elderly neighbours complain however to her husband that the noise is causing her great stress. I have sometimes seen this woman tear down left wing or pacifist or anarchist posters on the street and her husband interestingly is named "Benito". They are in their seventies, it alwasy strikes me how many Adolfs, Benitos, and such there are in Continental cities in a certain demographic group.
