The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Globalise Resistance Bulletin - Evian etc

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday May 07, 2003 23:35author by . Report this post to the editors

.

Get to the g8 protests in Evian, it is going to be huge!!! Mobilisations
will be incredible from Italy (where there was 1 million for the May 1st
protest against the war), Spain and France.

There has been alot of celebration by the US administration and in the
media over their 'victory' in Iraq. That war was fought for oil and we
can see this now with the US control of the oil fields. The
international movement that opposed that war will be joining the
anti-capitalist globalisation movement in Evian at the end of this month
to show that far from having disappeared we are stronger and more
determined to fight for a better world.

TO BUILD FOR EVIAN (alternative summit and protest 29th May to 1st
June);

1. Get on the bus...BOOK now! you have to book your space on the BUS
before Wed the 14th.

see our website (www.freewebs.com/globalise) or ring 086 1523542 for
travel details.

2. PROTEST; PFIZER, IFSC 4.30 PM TUESDAY 13th MAY.

Protest at multinational greed - public funding for healthcare

Pfizer prices their aids drug in South Africa at $17 dollars per day,
while the average South African earns $7 per day. Pfizer earned 1.2
billion dollars last year alone from this drug (for more info see our
website or ACT UP usa)

3. PUBLIC MEETING; OUR WORLD IS NOT FOR SALE; PROTEST AGAINST THE g8
THURSDAY 15th MAY, 7.30 PM Liberty hall

speakers from trade unions against privatisation, debt and development
coalition, sinn fein, socialist party and GR

4. ANTI WAR ASSEMBLY

this saturday 10.30 liberty hall, forum for anti-war activists to
discuss the Iraq war and current US military occupation and debate the
future of the anti-war movement.

5. The GR steering committee met on Friday in attendance were, Pat
(Greens), Mary (Comlamh), Clare (Antiwar), Hugh (SWP), Nora, Ciaran
(SF), Rory (SWP) and Garreth (SP) couldnt attend.

The above issues were decided and also that GR is calling a solidarity
protest with Evian on June 1st at 2oclock at the central bank, Dame St.
Also GR is organising a protest at the World Economic Forum meeting in
Dublin on the 20th/21st October. We want to make o2o absolutely huge.

If you are interested in getting involved in the steering committee or
giving us a hand with building for Evian please ring rory at 086 1523542

Will Aoife Allow Questions FRom The Floor?
by Curious Wed, May 14 2003, 9:51am

Tonight in Conways at 8pm
by The Good Bus Wed, May 14 2003, 9:59am

I am posting this here because if I post it as a new article it will just get moved here anyway so please refrain from any nonsense comments about splitters, sectarianism, etc.

The Good Bus second meeting is taking place tonight at 8pm in Conways pub on Parnell Street. Go to the north end of O'Connell Street and take a left. Its opposite the Rotunda Hospital.

Check out our website for what we will be discussing.

All are welcome.

Dont be ridiculous...
by Will she? Wont she? Wed, May 14 2003, 12:35pm

Of course Aoife Ni F wont bother with questions from the floor.

Or if there are, they'll be the most useless, pointless, SWP-style 'remarks' which the panel will agree with.

Will the panel debate tactics? No.
Will the crowd debate tactics? No.
Will the people be informed about Evian? No.
Will the panel preach to the converted? Yes.
Will GR/SWP try and recruit people? Yes.
Will people be turned off politics after Evian? Yes.
Will GR/SWP actually do revolutionary protest in Evian? No.
Will they capitalise on other people's actions at Evian? Yes.

Their website (GR) at the moment has a picture of Carlo Giuliani on it. It disgusts me. This is the group who in Genoa who actively discouraged everyone from getting involved in direct action against property and the police. For them to put a memorial up to a person who they actually would have condemned were he not killed is a gross insult.

Or do GR advocate attacking police? Yeah right.

GR/SWP/IAWM are the biggest obstacle right now to genuine revolutionary change in this country. Fuck 'em!

Here is an report of Saturdays meeting from a non-IAWM committee member in the interim until Aoifes report is posted here. A fair reflection on the day I think.

no room was booked. different people use the account and different people post. an 'organiser' doesnt have to be the same as a leader - in that they dont have any decision making power over anyone else. and this post was up on the newswire twice (because two different people posted similar things) so it was moved here, not posted here originally. and the Good Bus doesnt mind what GR do - we respect diversity, we will all be in Evian at the end of the day.

Think that's all the questions answered politely.

Who booked the room and posted the email? Who decided to talk about 'non-alignment'? And why post here ? Should GR post everytime you push the goodbus as the squeaky clean alternative?

The agenda you're pushing is clearly the 'individualistic non-sense of the self' pushed by our rulers.

We are a group of non-aligned, autonomous activists who are thinking of going along. We're having informal discussions/chats in Conways Pub in Dublin (on Parnell Street, walk to the north end of O'Connell Street and go west, its across from the Rotunda Hospital) every Wednesday in May at 8pm. That's the 7th, 14th, 21st, and maybe the 28th.

What are we going to talk about? That will be up to the group! Anything & everything is up for discussion. Why are we going, what will we do when we get there, what method of protest people would prefer to use, why are we going independently of other groups or political parties, and our experiences on previous large scale demonstrations. There will be no 'leaders' or speakers at these chats, everyone will be encouraged to participate equally and fairly.
