The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

Is the era of cheap internet surveys over? A new paper demonstrates that AIs can now be "trivially programmed" to answer online surveys in ways that are essentially indistinguishable from humans.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Irish Social Forum open space consultation process Open Day: What kind of social forum in Ireland? Convergence Festival Cultivate Centre, West Essex St., Temple Bar, D. 2 Saturday, May 24th

Who should take part?
· Anyone involved in formal or informal groups / movements / NGOs
expressing the needs of Irish society
· Anyone interested in building a Social Forum to connect up our different movements and express the "other world" that our movements are building
· Anyone interested in opposing the future that the World Economic Forum, the EU and our own rich and powerful tell us we have to accept

What is the Open Day? · Activists and organisers from a wide range of different movements have
already spent several months in consultation discussing the possibility of creating
an Irish Social Forum, and what it should look like.
· The goal of this Open Day is to extend the process and involve activists,
movements and organisations which have not already got involved in the discussion.
· We hope that this day will give a flavour of what it's like to work with
people from different sectors and will be part of our shared learning process in
moving towards the "real" Irish Social Forum, which will be constituted in June
on the basis of these discussions.

Programme for the day
09.30 - Welcomes
10.00 - Opening: What have the (World, European) Social Forums been like?
10.30 - Discussion groups: What do we want from an Irish Social Forum?

To avoid disappointment please register your attendance for May 24th as soon as

just a quick report from the Social Forum meeting. About 60 people attended for all or part of the day. It was agreed that there would be another days meetings in late June to launch the Forum which will take place as a counter summit to the World Economic Forum in late October.
There will be a meeting in the Convergence centre this coming thursday at 7:30 if anyone wants to get involved.
I'm sure a fuller report and minutes from the meeting will be posted up in the next few days.

Comment above is from Brian Wallace, the Cork neo-nazi, and is a worthy candidate for deletion in my opinion.
