McDonalds Takes My Meal

category sligo | rights, freedoms and repression | opinion/analysis author Tuesday October 07, 2003 15:06author by Dannie McQauthor email Onefukedupkid at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Yesterday I went to the Burger King on O'Connell Street and got a take away meal. I left the joint to meet with my mates in McDonalds. After a few minutes the manager came up to me and took my meal off me saying "next time you eat in here make sure it's McDonalds". He then dumped it in the bin. It wasn't even half ate and it really annoyed me cause he actually threw away my donought which was in a plain brown bag on the middle of the table.

Restuarants and pubs, generally speaking, have a policy that you can't bring in outside food and eat it there. Obviously, they want you to buy their food - not somebody else's. Just as obviously, they are not there to provide a public seating area - they are there to provide seating for customers, who buy food. If anyone could just come in, sit down, and do what they pleased, there wouldn't be any seating left for the customers - who are the reason that the business pays rent and provides seating.

Now, the manager didn't have to be an arsehole about the whole thing. Grabbing your food and binning it seems a little excessive.

But, there's no great mystery as to why he would do this. I mean, DUH. Is it really so difficult to figure out?

will be trivialised. Is this what Indymedia is reduced to in Ireland? Some drone wittering on about being willingly ripped off by global capitalists (TWICE!) and some twit explaining the context and legality without a hint of irony, let alone self-awareness. Eating burgers obviously does soften the brain.

I thought they were trying to somehow be funny. to get a rise, if you wish.

Please tell me you are taking the piss. Leaving aside the rudeness of the manager (it's something that they teach at business school, I always think), it's common standards in any food industry that you do not bring in products - in particular cooked food - from another establishment. Part of this is self-interest in controlling the use of their property, but part of it is also good common sense in protecting against food poisoning etc - this also happens with things like dining rooms - if you have foreign products coming in the whole control process is a joke.

We've all read No Logo and Fast Food Nation etc - and know that McDonalds are a destructive and corrupting influence on everything from advertising to cuisine and all points in between.

But 'articles' like this are ignorant and only serve to support right-wing stereotypes of the opposition to fast-food culture.

Your actions were foolish to say the least. I am amazed that somebody would spend time to publish such a trivial matter on this website and complain about something when they were 110% in the wrong.

But then again some people think they have a right to take over the street themselves !!!!

McDonalds is an evil fascist organization. Move to california and come into a Carls Jr. the sort of thing that happened to you would never happen here so dont you worry your pretty little head about it anymore o.k.

maybe the manager was a nice guy but didnt like snotty kids hanging around the place. If your eating BK food your only there to loiter. You never know he/she could be working two jobs to feed his family etc and was having a bad day. Whatever you feel about the company attacking people who work there is not on. You dont know anything about who they are and why they have to work there. they probably couldnt give a shit about your politics because they need the money. Even if someone is working behing the counter of McShit they deserve respect.

Get it fuckin right will yiz!

-big guns eh?
the article on Chomsky is available to read at:
http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2003/10/278361.html
http://www.zmag.org/weluser.htm
http://vancouver.indymedia.org/news/2003/10/70421.php

it's also in India, and to be honest is reproduced in French and English and published on open info-source every hour zone of the planet.

The manager had no right to take your junkfood.
He did though have a right to withdraw the invitation offered to all citizens (provided they wear shoes) to enter his franchise of Mc Death and eat their junk food.
You may find a way around this thus (though neither I nor Mr Chomsky approve in the least):
Go back to Mc Death wearing shoes, order a kilogram of junkfood, and then sit yourself in the window and repackage your Mc Death food with empty wrappers from Burger King. You will not be breaking any legally binding article of the invitation to "dine"/"purchase". Make sure everyone outside see's you eating your Mc Death from BurgerKing wrappers.
This is "almost evil" as no-one ought to eat Mc Death or BurgerMonarchy food, but you certainly will circumvent the annoying little regulations and hopefully provoke a "testcase" when the security gaurds kick you out. You will naturally continue to eat BK wrapped McD food outside the emporium.
Both I and Mr Chomsky will bless you from afar, but you won't get many donations to your campaign for the first four years.

Here is a suggestion for you sir. Rather than further upset the manager of my beloved McDonalds by bringing in a pizza to eat, why don't you just eat a bullet instead?!

I was in Burger King Patrick St a few months ago and a young guy ( guess which side of the river he was from)was siitng at a table near the door drinkin a can of royal dutch. The staff wouldnt go near him. Basically fast food mega global corporations are an instrument of zionist oppression as this incident proves. The hamburglar has been persecuted in order to provide a mandate for the state of israel. Is the fillet of fish not a star of david in a bun, ask for one next time your in mcdonalds , they dont exist. It is not even a fillet for gods sake!!!!!
