It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

IPSC launches campaign for EU action on Mid-East rights abuses

category national | eu | news report author Tuesday April 13, 2004 01:16author by Paul - Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaignauthor email supportpalestine at ireland dot comauthor address PO Box 9124, Dublin 1author phone 01-6770253 Report this post to the editors

EU-wide petition seeks politicians' support for Palestinian rights

The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign has launched a petition from politicians calling on the European Council and the European Council of Foreign Ministers to insist that Israel cease construction of the separation wall across Palestinian land on the West Bank. If Israel does not comply, the petition says, then the human rights clause in the EU-Israel trade agreement should be invoked to suspend Israel's favourable trading rights with the EU.

The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign, in conjunction with other European groups working for a just peace in Israel/Palestine, has launched a campaign calling on Irish politicians to seek EU action on human rights abuses in Palestine, particularly the separation wall currently being built across Palestinian land in the West Bank.

The IPSC has written to all members of the Oireachtas to ask them to sign an EU-wide petition calling for action on the wall. The petition asks the European Council (of heads of government) and the EU Council of Foreign Ministers to put pressure on Israel to comply with the UN General Assembly resolution of 21 October 2003, sponsored by EU states, which called for an end to construction of the wall and the dismantling of sections already built. The petition also calls for the suspension of Israel's favourable trading links with the EU if it does not comply with this requirement.

A spokesman for the IPSC said: "The construction of the Wall across Palestinian land in the West Bank entails serious human rights abuses. Over 274,000 Palestinians live in the area on the Israeli side of the Wall or inside enclaves completely surrounded by the Wall or secondary barriers associated with it. Many of these people will be prevented from gaining access to schools and clinics, towns and other social services by the Wall, and some have already been required to apply for short term permits in order to continue to live in their homes.

"In addition, the wall threatens the whole basis of the search for peace in Palestine that has been pursued by Palestinians and the international community - a land for peace deal that would see a Palestinian state constructed in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The wall will cut off at least 14% of the West Bank, including some of the most fertile land in Palestine and precious water resources. If the planned eastern wall is also pursued, over 40% of the West Bank will be stolen.

"We are calling on Irish elected representatives to respond to the strength of feeling in the Irish public on this issue. Article 2 of the EU's Association Agreement with Israel, which grants Israel preferential trading status, states that the Agreement is based on 'respect for human rights and democratic principles'. If action is not taken on the wall and other serious human rights abuses, that human rights clause will appear meaningless.

"The IPSC asks all concerned citizens to contact their local public representatives and ask them to express their support for this petition."

The text of the petition and other information is availble on the IPSC website: www.supportpalestine.org .

There are no Christian suicide bombers and I certainly wouldn't class Edward Said and Hanan Ashrawi as terrorists, however warped their views may have been. The fact is, suicide terrorism is not a spontaneous expression of frustration. Mentally subnormal 14 year olds do not suddenly build complex bombs and try to kill themselves and others with them unaided, any less than a ten year old getting fooled into taking a package containing a bomb to a checkpoint is an expression of frustration on the ten year old's part. No, we are dealing with Islamist terrorism here and it is not racist to point that out, simply stating an obvious fact.

Incidentally, you may be interested to know that I will no longer be contributing to this wonderful site. The reason for this is that I am finding that, not only are any threads that I initiate being deleted by the editor(s), now my posts are starting to be deleted, too. The only reason for this would seem to be that my views are regarded as unacceptable. As this a breach of the principle of free and democratic expression (supposedly) espoused by this site, I can only conclude that gross hypocrisy is going on here. Actually, I think that tells us a lot about the so-called anti-war movement, which is no more anti-war than Yasser Arafat, and its cartoon-like, 2-D viewpoints. So you can now all be as anti-Semitic as you like, as you will be talking to each other. I hope you find it interesting.

It is my belief that, deep, deep down, the Israeli collective mind hates itself and everyone else. Its on a death wish.

the true terror regieme is Israel whose butchery and repression causes 25% of Palestinians to live in abject poverty and starvation according the UN and Red Cross.

Israel is the country that uses nuclear terror against its neighbours to continue its colonisation of the land it has been stealing progressively since 1948.

The sooner trade sanctions are invoked against your murderous regieme, the better.

Anything would be preferrable to the policy of apeasement which failed against you, as it failed against Hitler and Milosevic!

As for your racist views on Arabs/Muslims and no doubt about Christians and other gentiles behind their backs, for once either be honest about your own corrupt and bankrupt state and leaders or else shut up!

Christian Palestinians have been every bit as much involved in the Palestinian struggle for freedom as Muslim and atheist Palestinians.

Prominent Palestinians from a Christian background include George Habbash, founder and long-time leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the intellectual Edward Said, the negotiator and former minister Hanan Ashraw, Democratic front for the Liberation of Palestine Secretary General Niaf Hawatmeh, director of the Palestinian Centre for Rapprochement Ghassan Andoni, etc, etc.

Avi, you can't just make up any blatant lies you like because people will realise that's what they are. Try and copy the more sophisticated Israeli government lobbyists and use more subtle lies. Believe me, it works for them.

The sort of idiots who would do that would attempt to do it anyway. Remember that there is no concession Israel can make to the likes of Hamas, because Hamas wants to destroy all of Israel period. Remember also that every Israeli city contains a large Arab population as well, so such an atrocity would be inflicted on Arabs just as much as everyone else.

In any case, consider this: the Palestinian Christians, who are persecuted by the Palestinian muslim majority, are subject to just the same restrictions as they are. YET they do not engage in terrorism, still less suicide terrorism, which would seem to disprove the contention that terrorism results from frustration.

The fact is, the Palestinians are oppressed by their own people (Far more Palestinians have been killed by Palestinian terrorist gangs than ever were by the IDF.) The ordinary Palestinian has been let down by the inherent corruption of Arab society. The Palestinians - so called - have brought all their misery on themselves, I am afraid. All very sad for them.

Well Avi, it might stop a few suicide bombers in the short term ( but not all ), but the hate it and other Israeli actions contribute to won't stop a determined Palestinian with a nuclear suitcase or some such weapon walking into a Israeli city some day in the future and letting it off. We'll see how much your fence has contributed to security then.

organisation is silent on the dispatch of terrorist infiltrators into Israel from the areas behind the wall. The suicides and murders of ordinary people targeted as such, is indisputably a war crime, and ipso facto also a grave breach of human rights of the innocent victims, many of whom are often Arabs, foreign workers, tourists as well as Israelis. While the fence may impede livelihoods and family reunions, it does not destroy human life, and is a necessary security measure. Guess what? Terrorist atrocities against innocent people inside Israel are WAY DOWN since the start of the fence's construction. This would appear to demonstrate that the fence, along with the IDF's proactive stance against terrorists, actually does far more to save human life than take it. The entire issue of the fence is yet another piece of Palestinian terrorist propaganda swallowed hook line and sinker by naive people with closed minds who know nothing - and want to know nothing - about Palestinian fascism.
