Mayday: All the Shit that Shouldn't Be Fit To Print

category dublin | summit mobilisations | opinion/analysis author Tuesday April 27, 2004 01:27author by tabloid overdose Report this post to the editors

hacks scour indymedia.ie: base articles on anonymously published posts and comments: Journalism???

william martin murphy style meeja campaign in full throttle - still feeding on their own (mostly imported) excrement

Media Mayday Muckspreading Session Continues
And by the looks of things the shit will continue spreading until the cows come home. Protesters being characterised as mass-murderers in the Sun and witch-hunted by the ‘oh so Irish’ Ireland on Sunday. Truth is a precious commodity round these parts when you consider that Mary Harney, on Primetime this evening, made the argument with a straight face that her Department does not count the number of complaints they receive from immigrants here on work permits because - ‘that would be discrimination’.

WE Seize! : Getting To Grips With Information Society
Margaret finished by saying that opening the centre, Ireland’s first independent media centre, was perhaps the proudest day of her life, there was no champagne or massive crowds only the energy and buzz of those involved in getting it ready. Opening the key and seeing people come in for the launch was something special, it is a big massive step for Ireland’s independent media network.

Why Protest? From Blueprint to Exploitation
The existing policies of the Irish govt. to safeguard the rights of migrant workers and their families are "deficient and lacking in scope." The Human Rights Commission has said there is a resistance at govt. level to protect the rights of immigrant workers. The International Convention on the Protection of all Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (ICPMWF) has not been ratified here. This international human rights legislation came into force in July 2003 to protect a range of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights but it has been ignored by the Irish govt.

BS Spotter Corner
If I sent you an e-mail, whether anonymously or otherwise, claiming that I had invented a perpetual-motion machine, would you splash that across your front page? Methinks the scaremongers are getting desperate. = ALL e-mails are traceable.
= Did it come from the 'security services? or even from your own newsroom?
or from some mental hospital? (is there a difference?)

How much is all this media attention adversely affecting what "we" are trying to achieve? Surely there are pro's as well as con's? But how much are the con's outweighing the pro's?

I am also basing these questions on the Assumption that the con's are outweighing the pro's in the first place. Anyone care to Clarify!??

Im sure this debate has already taken place on Indymedia but I have not stumbled across it.
