Antispeciesis protest "None of us would like to end up like this.."

category international | animal rights | press release author Wednesday August 18, 2004 22:26author by Sharon Núñez - ALA - Alternativa para la Liberación Animalauthor email sharonn at liberacionanimal dot orgauthor phone +34 915 328 495 Report this post to the editors

Four activists belonging to the organization ALA-Alternativa para la Liberación Animal (Alternative for Animal Liberation) remained naked and plastified inside meat trays (similar to the ones we can find in supermarkets), in order to denounce the exploitation that other-than-human animals are subjected too.

"None of us would like to end up like this.. neither would other than human animals."

The event took place in the Puerta del Sol, in the centre of Madrid, on Saturday the 31 of July. It began at 12.00 o'clock in the morning and lasted about an hour. We were obliged to finish, when members of the police put an end to the representation.

Beside the plastified bodies, banners were exposed and there was also a stall where information on animal rights was given out.

The event titled “None of us want like to end up like this, neither do non-human animals”, is part of the campaigns that ALA-Alternativa para la Liberación Animal carries out with the objective of questioning and eradicating non-human animal discrimination.

Speciesism, or discrimination due to the specie of belonging, is a prejudice similar to sexism or racism, and consequently, individuals who don´t belong to a certain group see their interests ignored, or not considered in an equal way.

The only relevant characteristic in order to respect someone’s interest in life and freedom, is their capacity to feel (welfare, suffering, etc), any other characteristic, such as an individuals sex, color of skin, type or degree of intelligence or specie is irrelevant from a moral point of view.

An individual’s life must be respected, if he or her has the capability of enjoying it, and this capability is something that all of us sentient beings (human and non-human) share. Our lives matter to us independently of its value to others, all beings with the capacity to feel, experience their life as valuable and unique.

Thousands of animals die every second due to our way of consuming. That is why in order to respect other-than-human animals we must adopt a vegetarian diet. A plant based diet is healthy and varied, and even more important, it puts an end to thousands of unfair deaths, and to a tremendous amount of suffering. A vegetarian diet and an ethical lifestyle (neither should we use animals in laboratories, as entertainment or clothing) are the only real alternatives to animal exploitation. Respect means all interests are given the same relevance, ignoring sex, race and specie.

Animals should not be considered our properties or tools, our opposition to their exploitation in our every day life is essential for them. Society will only change, when each one of its members questions their prejudices, and puts an end to them in their every day life.

Please. One step at a time. First deliberate killing for fun. Then (in twenty years time) deliberate killing for science. Then (in one hundred years time ) deliberate kiling for food. I personally will only eat feathered animal as they are biologically inferior to mammals.

anti-specieism is right up there with primitivism on top of the stupidity premiere league.

It only takes a nano-second to realise how absurd it is. Bacteria is placed on an equal footing with humanity. Pasteurisation of a litre of milk becomes a greater crime than the holocaust. Squashing a mosquito is equivalent to murdering a child. Every anti-parasitic medicine is a weapon of mass destruction.

Equating discrimination within a species with discrimination across species is just plain wrong. We are biologically hard-wired to strive for the survival of the genes of our species above all other species. If we lose this, we die out. Simple as that.

Research has proven in the olden days that many species survived through co-operation, not competition.

BSE/mad cow disease are the result of inhumane commericial intensive factory farming and the selfish exploitation of animals for profit.

Federal regulators have accused University of California researchers of mistreating animals used in medical experiments over a three-year period, according to a complaint made public Tuesday by an animal-rights group.

The Aug. 31 complaint showed the Department of Agriculture issued 60 alleged violations of animal-care regulations stemming from research conducted between 2001 and 2003, including charges that scientists at the San Francisco campus experimented on a monkey's brain without giving the animal pain killers.

Among the 60 civil charges are allegations that researchers overbred monkeys, deprived monkeys of water, and operated on a lamb and its fetus without anesthesia. "The gravity of (the university's) violations is great," the complaint read.

The school faces punishment ranging from fines to the loss of its medical research license if the allegations prove true. The complaint was distributed to reporters by In Defense of Animals, an organization that has been investigating and complaining about UCSF's handling of laboratory animals.

The following quote is the stupidist thing I have ever come across

"Research has proven in the olden days that many species survived through co-operation, not competition."

What a load of crap.

When were the "olden" days? The 1950s? What was it like "Animal Farm".

What a load of bollocks.

Please shut up!

it is not fair to animals that people test on them. Take a minute think about if you were that animal how would you feel. it is not their fault that they stuggle to break free from a horrible thing you are about to do to them. they are the same as people. they have feelings like you and i. making them take meds. is like someone forcing you to do drugs. I know it is for a good cause but it is not fair to those poor animals that need our help to survie that life that they live.
