This is the man who singlehandedly brought Britain to bankruptcy. Most kids probably dont know that a single individual speculated against Sterling and brought the conservative administration to within an IMF emergency loan of complete fiscal disaster. (was it for pique? or was it for profit?)

This is the man who predicted that capitalism would consume itself and that the hyper capitalist system would collapse, a complex allegation he then withdrew.

This is the man who with bad skin, and suits that look just a little too big for him, has become the "only" private citizen who's wealth is measured in proper % figures of World GDP who has said the system doesn't work. He is in short perhaps the only private billionaire who's picture you will ever recognise.

the punt (old irish money) went to 1.30 sterling. Which was a difference of two mars bars or marathons (old snickers).

Soros made one billion profit that day.

(this would include deducted travel expenses to and from work, expenses for food and health care, expenses for the clothes he needs to wear being that important, and was estimated by the IMF to be how much his personal wealth increased from opening of Tokyo to closure of LA financial markets).
It was a very long day's work, and gave a very heavy kick in the bollox to the British financial system and banks that had lots of unforeseen effects, some of which were considered sort of cool, and some which were very shit, but the balance has been perceived as "cool" so that Soros came out of it all looking like a right clever clogs and a good man to have vaguely on your side in a geopolitical showdown situation. & very very very very rich. (very)Wonky eyes Blair arguably might not be up to his eyes in Yankee listening devices and texan oil money now, if Sep 16 1992 hadn't occured).

And it effected us in more ways than making mars bars cheap in county down.

All the irish manufacturers and exporters including agricultural and financial service sectors found their products to be too expensive for the neighbours to buy, and accordingly couldn't sell anything. This was one of the problems about electronically based money, money which is not tied to anything of barterable or real value.
But of the lessons taught by wiley old Soros, that autumn, one of them wasn't the absolute insecurity of electronic money. That hadn't quite happened yet. [ I'd argue it still hasn't occured completely ]

i saw the CNN interview last night, and it was quite peculiar to see a fawning anchorman ask permission to inquire "do you Sir think it's right we have a political system where very rich individuals can influence the result?"

He did that without blinking. I didn't see the Bloomberg channel coverage.

Anyone else got a Soros story / comment / attitude?

Well Peter Myers has some interesting stuff .... though he draws a lot on Executive Intelligence Review (LaRouche) material depicting Soros as a Rothschild agent ..... which in some politically correct quarters might be considered as a politically incorrect sort of a thing to do .......

LaRouche is not everybody's favourite nutter but the EIR often has interesting material not published elsewhere ......

Take with as much salt as your doctor will allow ......

Anyway glad to see Mr. Soros is making a healthy profit from the Eircom formerly known as Telecom Eireann ....

Soros is everybody's favorite target - the Left hates him and the Right hates him - all sorts of creepy ideas come out from the woodwork when people talk about him, just short of using the J-word, but close enough so people know what you're talking about - wink wink. Being a 'J' himself and making his riches in currency trading only confirms things in many people's twisted minds.

There's a pretty long list of countries that blame him for their economic woes - including Hungary - which someone close to me is from and she still today spits Soros' name out with disgust. Soros justifies this by saying that its only his job and that as long as the world does not create a world system to regulate him, someone else would do exactly what he's doing. Not his fault that he does it better than anyone else.

A sort of respectable unrespectable position to take.

But I can't help myself and enjoy watching someone who both the Left and Right hates :-)

The US Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert can't attack him for being a Capitalist - making money aint no sin - so he suggests Soros is a Drug Smuggler:

Aside from his Capitalist Sins, I think he's wonderful - dumping millions of dollars into efforts and organisations in the USA to kick Bush out of office. Liberals and Progressives in America need all the money they can get - nice to have a Capitalist on your side, it happens so rarely.

He's also just a very interesting character to track. Having survived fascism and communism, succeeding like few ever have within global capitalism, he makes a unique critic of the very system that has nurtured him. Unless Bill Gates has a midnight conversion to Anarchism, not many on this planet can speak from his experience.

So many conspiracies float around the net about him it is hard to keep track of.

My personal favourite is that he has his evil tentacles wrapped around indymedia (rumour has it that he lurks on the Indymedia.ie Editorial List ( http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-ireland-editorial ) and occasionally trolls the newswire, but that's just a rumour - or is it?
