May Day Demonstration - Solidarity with Migrant Workers

category national | worker & community struggles and protests | event notice author Thursday March 31, 2005 16:10author by Cian Report this post to the editors

This years May Day trade union demonstration will take place on Saturday April 30th meeting at 2.30 at the Garden of Remembrance in Parnell Square. The demo will march to Liberty Hall and is on the theme of solidarity with migrant workers. The march has been called by the Dublin Council of Trade Unions

Here's why it's on 30 Apr, not May 1st

This shows mature judgement by the Trade Union leaders - high time too - who obviously have decided to change the day as a mark of respect to his Holiness the Pope - they realise that coming so soon after his recent death it would surely be sinful to profane the Sabbath with a communist parade, keeping people away from Mass and true salvation.
In fact, they will probably want to be at Mass themselves, begging God's forgiveness for ever having incited workers to disobey the Lawful Authority he has placed on Earth.
In any case, Paisley and the Arsebishop of Dublin will be well chuffed to see such wonderful pre-emptive submission.
30th April is also the feast day of St. Judas the Pious Scab, can this be a coincidence?

PS: Knee-pads will be supplied to those who cannot afford rubber trousers for the trip to Liberty Hall. Cruxifixion paraphenelia can be hired at extortionate rates from the Opus Dei contingent.

This is one of the most important May Day celebrations in a long time. We the Irish working class must show all immigrant workers that we are 100% behind them in their fight for their rights as workers and citizens of the world.

Please do you're best to be there.

Bring a Red Flag.

RAR is planning just what you ask for.

Expect to see asylum seekers from a diversity of nationalities at this year's May Day in solidarity with the GAMA workers and other migrants.

I doubt it will though

turkish workers - yes we'll stand up for them

nigerians denied the right to the dignity of work for years - who is standing up for them in the trade unions? Not fucking many that I've seen.

It's a great idea to make solidarity with migrant workers the theme of the march.

Now it's up to us to make sure that the march isn't the usual damp squib by actually building for it. God knows the DCTU never show much interest in actually advertising it and encouraging people to come.

Hello! We are sharing the same will that May Day is an important day: The International Workers Day - day-off strictly respected in France, remembering the struggle of workers since generations enabling us to get to aim to proper working conditions - But this day is the 1st of May, whatever week day this might be, and not the 30th of April, as being a saturday this year... Don' t get me wrong. This day is, since years, a day of protest and reflection towards the situation of workers worldwide. For it to be put on a different one is just aiming to emphasize the power the "ruling class" has on us, excluding the only day we might have on their agenda.
I will obviously be part of the demo on the 30th of April, but just wanted to raise this point, as symbolism can be taken as a detail, but has an important impact on our daily life.
