RTZ donation to the Geological Survey of Ireland

category international | environment | opinion/analysis author Thursday August 11, 2005 14:54author by Remembering RTZ in Bouganville in the South Pacific Report this post to the editors

A representative from the island of Bouganville came on an awareness trip to Ireland in the late 1990s

RTZ is a huge copper mining company well comparable to its sister multinational Shell.
Its damage in Bouganville was enormous - the island was blockaded for 9 years because Bouganvillians called Stop. Handed on as a colonial handbag until carried by Papua New Guinea.
RTZ has been recorded in recent weeks as having given a donation to the State's Geological Survey of Ireland, an employee of which Minister Dempsey has invited to be part of his advisory team on selecting a tender fo the health and safety fears of the people of Rossport.

Multinationals don't give donations out of a sense of charity so its reasonable to question what reasons where behind it. Its fair to say in Ireland given the history of corruption in the heart of government as exposed by the various tribunals that state agencies accepting money from big business is not a good idea!

It is indeed possible that this link could be totally unrelated. Then again, in the world of corporate politics anything is possible!

There is ample research and evidence to suggest that government and corporate relationships use all sorts of cosy committees, boards, commissions and the like to hide decisions from the public eye.
