Calls for Garda Reform from Donegal

Large meeting of nationwide victims of the endemic Garda collusion, corruption and abuse of powers, met in Raphoe yesterday to empower isolated victims and make demands, now as a group, for immediate Garda reform and an ombudsman among other things. Excellent day.

Media sources have confirmed to our family today that a full scale investigation is now been conducted by the Gardai into the suspicious death of our sister Mary, this report has been confirmed by a Garda spokesperson. The Reid family are delighted with this development and wish to express our sincere gratitude to the Gardai who have patiently worked with us during the past few months to achieve this objective. It is important that all the events which surround Mary's final hours are examined,it is important that people who may have seen Mary on the day she died make contact with the Gardai.Mary had left Derry and travelled to Donegal, she must have been seen so please let the Gardai know the identity of her companions on that day.Her car was a grey Vauxhall Corsa N279 GCS.I appreciate that an investigation involves freezing time so I want to freeze Wednesday 29th January 2003.

Most Garda are genuine people doing a difficult job in dangerous times. They are also human and do make mistakes, there should be a mechanism for the Garda to admit their mistakes instead of pretending otherwise and digging deeper holes. We all need a police force that we can have confidence in. I have not been involved in attempting to discredit the Garda as an organisation but I am concerned that Gardai that break the law are exposed and removed from the force.Garda Al does not reflect the qualities that I believe are important in his profession.

What happened to Mary Reid ? Why did she die on that day in January? Where did Mary spend her last hours?why did the Guards not investigate her death? why were her former political comrades the only organisation not asking questions about the lack of a professional investigation? I have many questions, who has the answers? The Reid family will continue to campaign for the truth.

Of course peter Wright oversaw the downgrading and virtual "no touch" of Melita Norwood the bolshivek granny whose only offence was to give the KGB nuclear weapon development info.
"little old sweetie"
Of course at that stage the Gardaí were looking for rent money on a house in Shannon free zone to watch Cuban aeroflot flights. if we had an accountable, transparent secret service in the irish state we'd know if they for the rent on that terraced house or not. But because we don't we have to rely on reading chapter 4 of mr Nice instead. Tantalizing stuff for the historians of tomorrow.

Simple question Marie, did McCann move to London after '69? Why?

Your comment about the harassment the swp get from the cops reminds me of the famous quote from Peter Wright the former assistant director of MI5 about the swp, he said they were "about as dangerous as a pond full of ducks".

Are you seriously saying that nobody would help poor Frank McBrearty except the angels of mercy from the swp? More likely you bunch of parasites seen a chance to get some publicity off the back of someone else.

By the way, did you sell many papers on the day?

Only came on this thread again by mistake and somewhat surprised to see it still live. To answer Frankie first - how is it there are photos of Eamonn McCann during the Battle of the Bogside (1969) and Bloody Sunday (1972) if he, as you claim, bottled it and ran when the area needed defending? I think you will find that everyone in Derry - including Martin McGuinness - will agree that McCann was central to organising the defence of the area, you ignoramus!!

As for Donal McFhearraigh's expertise that McBrearty's wanted - I think it was his organisational expertise as, I understand from what Frank McBrearty Jnr said that Donal - and the SWP - helped him organise things when no one else would. Again, maybe people should deal in facts rather than prejudice. As to the idea that members of the the SWP are not harrassed by the Gardai, try turning up regularly to an SWP meeting and you'll find out quick enough. Young people still living at home have their parents visited and people in their own places are stopped and harrassed frequently.

Why was Mary's death not regarded as suspicious by the Donegal Gardai. The Reid family believe the incompetence of the Gardai deserves an investigation, this is irrespective of how Mary actually died. There exists no evidence of an accident, there is no evidence(medical, written, verbal or visual)of suicide, her death was not due to natural causes. It therefore leaves open the possibility of foul play and that is a serious concern for us as a family. If I may respond to AL, I have never suggested that there should be a tribunal everytime someone dies or every time a crime isn't solved but I have suggested that an assumption by a Garda should never prevent a proper investigation .I am also interested to know why you believe that Mary Reid was a "terrorist".

Maybe it has something to do with the work the SWP has done on exposing Garda corruption - before it was popular or profitable."

Exposing Garda corruption??? The SWP would shit themselves if they came up against the Garda harassment working class people come up against.
Donal's expertise????? Have all the circuses left town? Is he at a loose end?
As for McCann, didn't his bottle go in '69 when he legged it to London while Republicans defended the areas?
As I've said this issue is too serious for the middle class kiddies to fuck up.

I think this is too serious an issue for people to start highlighting their prejudices against people such as McCann etc or their various political backgrounds. Im certainly no fan of Sinn Fein for example but anyone who is prepared to stand up and demand answers and accountability from these stomach churningly corrupt forces deserves a pat on the back no matter what theyir political orientation , even fine gael . The fact is that they are all Irish citizens and that Irish citizens have been grievously wronged by a variety of state forces , native and foreign .

Ive posted this link in another thread but I believe its highly relevant to this one too as an example of the massive scale of garda corruption and Sate collusion in it which has gone on for decades . Al simply refuses to countenance such a thing .

Back on form Al, you seem a bit touchy when criticism of the Gardai is raised. Clearly there wiill not be a call for an inquiry every time a person dies. However it is not unreasonable where there is suspicion that a police investigation was not robust for families of victims to request an examination of how the case was dealt with.
You would almost think that the Mc Brearty case had vindicated the Gardai.
The behaviour of the Gardai in Donegal has quite rightly raised many questions particularly where deaths that involve potential collusion with British secret forces are involved.

Mary reid was killed by the British according to Republicans. Others say it was the IRA and some suggest the INLA. Still again some are comvinced it was the UVA/UDA and LVF.

When your a terrorist its possible you will be assasinated by those you attack or possible by rival factions. More than likely it was a tragic accident and she really did drown along with her dog.

Now, should we have tribunals everytime someone dies? Or every time a crime isnt solved?

Sorry about youre sister. The crucial part of all this is Justice; and in southern Ireland there is none. I think some people will have to go all the way to Europe to get answers and Justice. my family are presently involved in a campaign against the donegal gardai in relation to the lack of a professional investigation into the death of our sister mary in january 2003. thanks to the publicity created by the mc brearty family , we can now tell our story and be taken seriously. the people require a police force that they can have trust and confidence in , we must all work together to achieve this objective, this can only begin by cleaning up all the corruption and incompetence of the past.

However, the idea that the SWP are trying to take it over is nonsense. Mary Kelly is right. If you don't want the campaign to be seen as being too influenced by the SWP, get involved in it and dilute any influence we might possibly have. Simple as that.

With the SWP EVERYTHING is party political. If you don't grasp that - you've a lot to learn and a lot of disappointment ahead.

This is a pretty serious meeting. Its good to see some people understand whats going on. I meant to come over from England but could not make it. This has nothing to do with party politics. All the parties are corrupt some more than others. It has everything to do with a Justice system that should now be like any other western European country. However, it is not is far worse than the North thats why all the top sinn fein dogs still live there. Southern Irealnd should have fair and accessible legal system that works within the frame work of European Convention on Human rights. However, southern Ireland or the Republic as some people like to call it lacks all these qualities. In fact it has got worse under the Celtic Tiger as the Government and some arrogant middle classes mainly based in Dublin think they can do nothing wrong. They even compared themselves to Switzerland and the Nordic states. What a joke! My father died in Roscommon hospital which was more like an Albania hospital. Certain families who cheated him out of money live in the lap of luxury with the protection of Finna Fail and the gardai. They do not end up in such hospitals thankfully the bastards. Remember all the farmers who lost money when Mr Ellis (finna fail senator) and Mr Twoey went bankrupt. One man in particular was helped out of the country by the Gardai even though he was caught with an illegal fire arm. I will not say who for fear of been sued. He lives in Spain to this day in luxury.

One more word of caution Sinn Fein has instructed its councillors throughout the country to vote with finna fail on local councils. It will only be a matter of time until you see both gardai and ex IRA men/women in the southern Irish police force. It’s already around the corner in the North. Wait ten years! What a corrupt combination that will make they are will suited to each other. That’s why Southern Ireland has no future in the long term. The EU money will have dried up. The rest of Europe will then have caught on to the Irish game. The cycle of emigration and hardship will begin again after 2012 when party finally ends. The property developers will have long left for the sun and so forth. Some have left already and are now active in the Eastern European property market. Sinn fein and Finna fail will control the country in a tight pact. The Eastern Europeans will be the new Irish in the future and I hope they make better job of it than the Irish. The place has no future!!

The Mc Brearty's will not be taken over by any party. The SWP had a lot of people there, so had Sinn Fein. The most active party member who has helped the Mc Brearty case is a Fine Gaeler!

The majority who attended were made up of people whose lives have been tortured and destroyed by this corrupt state, their corrupt blaGardai force, obedient media, corrupt legal profession and a non independent court system that has covered up all these very tragic crimes, framing and intimidating the innocent.
Harrowing tragic stories, unbelievable skullduggery by the so called Guardians of Peace.

Its shocking how the absent Government ministers on holidays have allowed Mr Mc Dowell make an extradition treaty with the CIA while he is guilty of support for criminal activity in the Gardai. And Raphoe is only the TIP OF THE ICEBERG!
Shame on every man and woman who walks thru the Dail gates and allows MC Dowell in. No call for resignation here, wake up and fire him!

Cowardly Government ministers and senators daily allow buisiness as usual, taking orders now not only from Britain, but from the CIA and Mr Bush, allowing themselves be THREATENED to not even think of disallowing US military use of Shannon for an illegal war, OR ELSE there will be terrible consequences.

Mr Mc Dowell and the blaGardai are busy now with the so called important security issues and the war on terror.
No Irish city could cope with an attack.
The simple peaceful and practical solution; withdraw landing services immediately at Shannon. Beg for apology to the people of Iraq and start to make serious retribution to them.

Apologise for shameful destruction of traditional Irish neutrality and

That would be a start, and the beginning of real solidarity with the Iraqis and other oppressed countries in the Middle East. To state the obvious, it makes sense to learn from the centuries of oppression here, and not participate in imperialist wars!

Mc Breartys are very brave, daring to catch Wolf Mc Dowell by the ears and not let go!
They are at the forefront of exposing the most rotten of this state, fighting for our civil rights and need all support from 32 counties.

If you dont want an SWP takeover, get involved now in supporting the country wide public meetings that are planned.

Great photos!
I think its a mistake to call for anything that will be controlled by this corrupt state.
Frank Mc Brearty JNR has the best experience needed to be an effective Ombudsman, helped by a citizens committee made up of others who have suffered similarly from the state.
Well done to the extended Mc Brearty family their women and all who helped organised this excellent meeting and to a great audience who travelled from afar to particpate.
