NEWSFLASH: Goldfish Resist Radically Reports of two distinct actions in Ireland over the weekend of 24-25th Sept. 2005. On the one hand is a self-critical report of an RTS-inspired "Take Back the City" and on the other is a report of anti-war activities that took place around Shannon airport.
From the newswire: Post Match analysis of the "Take Back the City" action in Dublin, Sept. 24th 2005. " [It] turned into the one thing we promised it would not be - Just Another Street party. Although fun was had and it was a great laugh when things eventually fell together you would have to have had a fair amount of cider inside you before you could convince yourself that it was the "working example of autonomy" that we had promised. To be honest, as one of the people involved in organising, I feel that we fucked up. From the newswire: A Weekend of Resistance in Limerick and Shannon (or as close as we could get). The weekend of resistance kicked off on Friday night when a public meeting was held in Halla Ide on Thomas St. in Limerick City. "The meeting entitled 'Shannon And The War On Terror: The War Comes Homes' was addressed by Ploughshares defendant and Catholic Worker, Ciaron O'Reilly, alongside planespotter Tim Hourigan from the Mid-West Alliance Against Military Aggression. The next day, Saturday 24th, there was a demonstration against the Government's policies and against Garda and Irish army complicity in the US military use of Shannon airport." |

Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8I think if we're going to compare these two actions then someone from the weekend of resistance is going to have to look at it critically and realise that it was about as much use as the Take Back The City march.
The main differences between Limerick and TBTC would be..
1. Take back the city involved at least 100 new faces who have never been involved in "politics" before.
2. Take back the city did not use the "protest as usual" forms even when the plan fell to shit. There were two crowds in the city centre that met up on the quays and the cops had no idea where the 2nd crowd came from.
People on the TBTC march carried barricades, ran through shops and de-arrested trollies showing that the youth are still revolting and believe me - they're getting younger (i'm not).
(these are the positive aspects I didn't feel needed posting in my original critique)
I think everyone needs look at their tactics and organisational methods, not just rts, where are they getting us? and where do we want to go?

Could W please grow up SOON? This is not a game where we compare to see which was better than the other!
Well done to both those in Dublin and Shannon! Don't understand the Dublin event really myself but I'm pretty sure it helped in some way to continue the spirit of revolt.
i'm really not trying to put these two events in competition or attack the weekend of resistance merely pointing out that neither of them were very effective.
We can entrench ourselves into positions of criticising each other and defending our own actions (to the point of fooling ourselves) or we can be open and honest about what we are all doing.

lads
just trying to add to this
there was more than the "2 protests"
the dublin one was part of a series of days of demonstrating alternatives, building up the networks, opening new avenues etc
personally, a big demo that comes along now and again is great and fun, but plugging into real day to day world and building up there is what is very important
a garden was started a half year ago in dublin 8, one of the places worst treated by the city; throw all the problems, junkies, clinics etc in there- the bin of the city?? as some refered to it, some "activists" have plugged in and helped in the garden, butr personally i thought more would have or that it could have been used as a social space during warm summer
anyway, just throwing that in, same goes for trying to make a social centre for city
we need space, we need new approaches
anyway i feel its great that theres all these different things going on
so what if there were young kids drinking cans and dancing on streets with no politic thinking- how political were you when you were 11 or 13?
point is from that they might and hopefully will participate in the building of spaces, resistance, creativity; more stuff
fair play to all who are doing something, fighting for what they believe in
there is an activist ghetto, but the walls are coming down, maybe slowly, but they are coming down
Are we now in favour of encouraging 11 year-olds to drink cans of beer in the street? Is 'liberation' about getting drunk and fitting the national stereotype? Would you like to see your 11-year-old drinking cans of beer and getting bollixed?
Serious question: are we in favour of young teens drinking at our events?
for me- i know what i was like at 12 - 13, i know that if these events were here id have been at them
berlin:
89-150
99-1,500,000 people dancing on the streets
creativity and unjoyment are tools for change
What in the name of the holy whore is " unjoyment " , and are microsft trying to get the patent on it?
