Diarmaid McCulloch recently claimed the British Empire "invented" Muslim homophobia in the 1800s. How can that be, wonders Steven Tucker, when Islam had been putting gay people to death for over a thousand years?

Clive Thompson blogs...
'It's a little dramatization of the lives of three different black French citizens. One is a teenager who gets apprehended by police and thrown in jail for an evening because he doesn't have his passport on him; another is an MBA graduate who can't find a job because he doesn't look "French" enough; and the third is a drug dealer. Each boils up with rage until they decide to start rioting.'

'I understand that the game models Hollywood and therefore all the props and characters are created to look like Made in USA. It would have been an enourmous task to include diversity in, say, buildings. Still, it is both funny and interesting that this film that is supposed to take place in the French banlieus looks so American, complete with US flags hanging from the walls.'

Paul Marino blogs...
'Blogging has clearly given voice to the numerous masses, but the message behind this film says more than anything I've read about the riots to date. While I'm not sure Machinima can or will propagate political rights activism across borders or cultures, the medium does provide the power to do so. And where else is that more appropriate but in the hands of people who need to have their message seen?'

Boing Boing has some words about it
BB notes: 'it's important to know that movies made with 'The Movies' are subject to Activision's EULA, which asserts Activision's exclusive copyrights in all of its original content. Since user-created movies seem to require at least *some* of Activision's copyrights (3D character models and/or environments at minimum), the DCMA could probably be used to take down movies. This might be of note if Activision doesn't agree with the content of political machinima made with 'The Movies.''

Machinima (a portmanteau word for machine cinema and/or machine animation) is both a collection of associated production techniques and a film genre (film created by such production techniques).
As a production technique, the term concerns the rendering of computer-generated imagery (CGI) using low-end 3D engines (as opposed to high-end and complex 3D engines used by professionals) in video games (typically, engines in first person shooter games have been used). Consequently, the rendering can be done in real-time using PCs (either using the computer of the creator or the viewer), rather than with complex 3D engines using huge render farms.
As a film genre, the term refers to movies created by the techniques described above. Usually, machinimas are produced using tools (demo recording, camera angle, level editor, script editor, etc.) and resources (backgrounds, levels, characters, skins, etc.) available in a game.
Machinima is an example of emergent gameplay, a process of putting game tools to unexpected ends, and of artistic computer game modification.
