Well spoken words Kate Hennessey!

The barbarism of the Nigerians who practise this needs to be shouted from the roof tops and those who live in poor old Ireland who are ignorant of the methods used on the young women need to do enlighten themselves.

People : This mutilation is not done in clinical conditions, it is mostly performed by old women with a sharp stone out in the bush.

Wake up Ireland!

Dear Minister for Justice Ahern, You have the power, given to you by the Irish people, to show some real compassion and humanity in the case of Pamela Izevbekhai and her two young daughters and let them remain in Ireland on Humanitarian grounds. God knows what stress this family has been under as they live in limbo facing interview after interview and court case after court case as they face deportation back to Nigeria, where the girls are in grave danger of being tortured with Female Genital Mutilation, a procedure which killed their little sister, and which if they should survive it, will leave them unable to enjoy a healthy relationship when they are adult. This is a BARBARIC CUSTOM, WHICH NIGERIA HASNT OUTLAWED. I heard a woman from the Nigerian Embassy say it was now " 'voluntary" . Did the the little sister who died give her permission to be killed?
Would you like this to be done to your daughters or sisters? Its not like male circumcision, its a torture, an OUTRAGE. I only had to see the mothers face on tv and in the newspapers to guess at the despair she feels. In the midst of all the gloom do the decent thing, its what the Irish people would wish you to do. We are in a financial crisis, but not so poor that we cant make room for this little family. Ask yourself, what drove them from a good lifestyle in a sunny African country, to a miserable life in an asylum hostel in damp wet Ireland? Was it the 19 euros ten cent a week pocket money? No. There must be a very compelling reason. I am counting on you Minister, to do the right thing for this family. Yours etc., Kate H ennessy.

Yeah, you're right we should send her and the girls back, she's already lost one child who bled to death from female circumcision.
(This is a substantiated fact...not just a story so she can stay !!) Nigeria is far enough away so none of you will hear their screams. After all no one heard the screams of people in the death camps in Germany during the second world war, or the cries of women being raped in Kosovo !!!

Where oh where has your humanity gone !!!

The Dublin convention permits those who have failed to meet the criteria for asylum to be sent back to the first safe country they reached.

author by Observerpublication date Sun Jan 15, 2006 02:15author address author phone Report this post to the editors

So ironically, just because Ireland has the highest economic growth, she came all the way to seek asylum here even though she knew it wasn't the first safe country she reached? Its obvious what the end of this story was going to be. She did not meet the criteria to gain asylum.

Return her to whatever country was her point of entry to the E.U.

Simple.

That would be the safe, legal thing to do.

author by citizenpublication date Sun Jan 15, 2006 02:07author address author phone Report this post to the editors

To be an economic migrant and be part of an organised campaign to lie in order to claim asylum legislation is an attempt to subvert the system. She failed as did 850 of her fellow Nigerians in 04 and a similar number last year. The majority of these people are missing despite there being ministerial deportation orders for them.

Subversion.

author by citizenpublication date Sun Jan 15, 2006 02:03author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Ireland has the highest economic growth and the lowest unemployment in the E.U.

Maybe that encouraged her to keep going when she was safe already!

Thats economic migration.

author by Observerpublication date Sun Jan 15, 2006 01:48author address author phone Report this post to the editors

The first safe country this woman arrived in would certainly not have been Ireland. Any asylum seeker is entitled by international law to seek asylum in the first safe country they reach. This woman's case was no exception to that. Whichever EU Country she arrived in 'first', then she must seek asylum there.

"to subvert the Irish asylum system"

Since when did you think this was the case?? If the Irish asylum system was subverted, the Minister for justice would have been long gone by now.. Why did this woman refuse to accept Irish law by refusing to leave when she had gone through the due process and did not meet the criteria? Its not like she was not just refused asylum for no reason you know.

Ireland wouldn't have been the first safe country this woman arrived in. How come she didn't apply for asylum in the first safe country she reached?
Irish people no longer fall for this campaign to allow every asylum seeker to be granted indefinite stay in the country because its simply unrealistic and is not going to happen.
Many asylum seekers have seen Ireland as a 'soft touch' for asylum seeking.

author by Observerpublication date Sun Jan 15, 2006 01:05author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Why is it that you wan't every single asylum seeker to be allowed indefinite stay in the country including those who do not meet the criteria for it? Irish people have seen this kind of unrealistic attitude before and no longer fall for it.
