FG Senator challenges integrity of An Bord Pleanala

category national | environment | news report author Saturday February 04, 2006 13:54author by Moleman Report this post to the editors

FG Senator Frank Feighan has publically called into question the integrity of members of An Bord Pleanala

Speaking at a public meeting in Ballyfarnon in County Roscommon on Friday night, Fine Gael Senator Frank Feighan has claimed that members of An Bord Pleanala are under "questionable influence" and appear to be acting as "Eco Warriers in disguise". Senator Feighan's remarks were made in relation to a number of highly controversial hotel and holiday home developments in the north Roscommon. On January 24th, An Bord Pleanala refused to uphold a decision by Roscommon County Council to grant permission for a 100 bedroom hotel and 293 hoiday homes at Lough Key. A further appeal in relation to a 93 bedroom hotel and 98 holiday homes on the shores of Lough Meelagh is currently before An Bord Pleanala and due for decision before March 10th.

Yes, Roscommon and the rest of the country needs more holiday homes and more hotels so the whole country can end up looking like Bundoran. Hurrah!

How anyone can describe an Bord Pleanala as "eco warriors" when you look at Tara or all the other awful "developments" they've allowed to go ahead is beyond me.

Just wanted to correct. Not all 293 houses have been refused. An 18 hole golf course and 193 houses are still under consideration. Decision by ABP not made yet.

If the Senator has any substantial allegations he wishes to make about unfair decisions by the An Bord then he should approach the Ombudsman. If not - if he was just engaging in a bit of rabble-rousing or playing to the gallery - he should be more careful about calling into question the integrity of important public bodies like the Bord. Might I also suggest that any member of the FG party complaining about nefarious planning deeds should remember the maxim about pots and kettles?
Those of us who take an interest in these matters, can't help think that if local authority planners were actually doing their jobs properly and implementing their own guidlelines they wouldn't be passing so many schemes which are subsequently turned down on appeal to the Board. It seems that local officials and councillors don't want to make unpopular decisions, so they are increasingly granting permission for unsuitable developments in the sure and certain knowledge that the schemes will be appealed to the Board and turned down.
