Recently (Easter Weekend) Joe Higgins in his leadership addresss to the SP national conference called for the construction of a "major party of the left" and pledged that his own party would "strive to assist such a development".
Now a few weeks later we have the clarification of what that meant:
"In the North, the Socialist Party continues to campaign in trade unions and community organisations for the launch of a new working class party. To be successful, a party would require the participation of serious forces from these organisations. An alliance of various existing left groups would have no real impact.
In the South, there has been a relatively low level of struggle over recent years. This means there does not exist at present the fresh layer of activists that for example, have been thrown up by the struggles in Germany and that have led to the formation of the WASG.
This is why we are not in favour of an immediate initiative to launch a similar group here. It would only attract activists from existing left groups who, apart from the Socialist Party, represent very little."

So it would seem that the word STRIVE was a nice little soundbite to rally the troops and to look good in the national papers. Thanks for the Clarification.
