UN urges freedoms for Arab women

category international | gender and sexuality | other press author Friday December 08, 2006 12:25author by Marie Stopes Report this post to the editors

More than half top-scoring pupils are girls, despite disadvantages. Discrimination against women is holding back economic and social development across the Arab World, a report by the UN's development agency says.

Arab women must be given greater access to education, employment, health care and public life, the report says. The Arab Human Development Report is an annual overview compiled by Arab academics and experts in the field.

Islam is not to blame for the problem, the report says, but rather political inflexibility, male domination and war.

In the West women are permitted a wide range of freedoms according to your modern fusion of Judeo-Christian/secular/Enlightenment traditions.
However in the Middle East we have a different but equally valuable cultural tradition - Islam. In accordance with our beliefs and traditions woman are treated not as socio-economic units but with respect and protection. Our traditions are sacred and must be respected by the West, especially the UN, an American dominated body.

The report was not written by westerners.

The Upper Sharia court in the northern state of Niger has sentenced two people to be stoned to death. Ahmadu Ibrahim, 32, and his lover Fatima Usman had confessed to pre-marital sex. They have 30 days in which to appeal the sentence

But ISLAM does not help womens rights AT ALL, lets get that straight

Neither does xtianity or any other religion. So it is amazing that some women actually want to be part of these religions by trying to get into the priesthood instead of embracing rationality and seeking an end to the various superstitions.

Islam is rational. In Islam women are respected and protected.
It is irrational to permit women to work outside of the home and neglect their children.
It is irrational to allow them to dress and behave like drunken prostitutes as many women are encouraged too in the so-called rational enlightened west.
The West is sinful wicked and evil and it is trying to destroy Islam be invading and killing our people on one hand and on the other undermining our religion.

Whippingpost: But ISLAM does not help womens rights AT ALL, lets get that straight

I am a christian born in a muslim country, raised and schooled amongst muslims. I can make a distinction between the sacred traditions of Islam and traditions of people who are muslims. They are not the same thing.

Islam has in large part illuminated world culture and promoted respect and tolerance - Islam preserved our libraries and history when christians were too busy gutting each other and the rest of the world. The Islamic poetry, literature, art, science and architecture that surrounded my childhood is breathtaking. The courtesy and hospitality of muslim people is profound, even when my own nation is slaughtering civilians in theirs.

There are traditions amongst muslim people that are unpleasant, many of them have no sacred origin and should end, just as I hope some of the traditions of my own parents or grandparents will end - look at Ireland, where christian "traditions" are in bloody conflict. There is nothing sacred there.

You can expect a retreat into more traditional and more fundamental and more extreme beliefs from any culture under threat. The international war on Islam is an appalling campaign that damages everyone, christian or muslim, and will haunt us for generations.

"Islam has in large part illuminated world culture and promoted respect and tolerance"

Fucking bullshit!

The Middle East is a backward shithole full of dictatorships, tyrannies and backward superstitious bigotted religion. Do you watch the news for fucksake? The Iraqi lunatics are blowing eachother up and cutting eachothers throats.

author by Rationalpublication date Sat Dec 09, 2006 16:00author address author phone Report this post to the editors

The Iraqis are cutting each others throats while the Americans tip toe through the streets, pass out flowers and feed the masses.
So its all Islams fault that there is such a momumental mess in the MIddle East?
Gimme a break, that is the most profoundly ignorant point of view i think i have ever come across on this site. It lets western capitalism off the hook totally and ignores Washingtons insessant interference at the behest of corporate America.

by and large Muslims are very tolerant and enlightened, they were applying higher mathematics and suveying the stars while we were still living in Mud huts.

How much of an outcry would there be if Britain or Italy or Ireland or Northern Ireland hosted a conference questioning the extent of the Holocaust.

Yet, not a whimper form the Left when Iran does so....

Hi my names Benjamin James and I'm from an Island called New Zealand, just to the right of Australia in the South Pacific Ocean.

I'll start with saying that American Culture and Arab culture are very different but in saying that they are kinda the same.... I'm no expert on either, I've put allot of thought into how much I can't stand American politics and Culture. Its gonna take something big to change that lot\...

In saying that there is also allot of diversity in America which inside the Underground can still create some unique and visionary characters.
And as for my views on Arabs and Islam... Islam culture is very old. I know it’s a touchy subject to start poking around in especially from someone whom is Agnostic. But no matter how old a Religion or culture is you've got to look at its Root, were and how it started. WE as people are very good at making up stories, Religion its self is way to shady and unclear of to were is origins started. I'm just saying I feel people should make their religion to just make this world work.

The problem for me starts with Equal rights... Its always said but never really worked on.
If we all made a conscious effort to treat each other with alittle respect...
* To not do everything for Money. If you have heaps of money, put it back into helping sumone less fortunate out. It may be your brother whom needs alittle help...?
* Women are Equal to men, and don’t forget it. We have a Penis and they have a Vagina, that’s the only difference... Actually from what I’ve experience from a country were women are educated as men are WOMEN ARE SMARTER.
* Black, White and any other color under the sun are people, not monkeys, Whiteys, Niggas, slit eyes just human beings. Treat them with the same respect you'd hopefully give your parents.
* This is the big ask, Religion really needs to be dumped...Weather that be the truth is told of why we are here, hell who know the Pentagon probably already know? Maybe a race from another planet may come and tell us their views on how we got here??? I still think at the moment we must get on with knowing that everyone dies not knowing. Once you can handle that knowledge you gotta live life in the now.

Anyway......................
I've had enough.
Bush Is Fucking gay and the biggest Puppet I know....
The world has become one blocked up pipe full of shit.
We got allot of work to do to get this place flowing clean again.

Arab, Islam, America, Russia e.t.c all gotta lot of problem. People gotta look into themselves and see the easiest root to solving the problems. I can tell you know Religion is not going to solve it, its not that easy. Praying aint gonna make a leg grow back or solve world hunger. People have got to work together and that aint gonna happen until we work on the small list provided above. It’s a difficult task but if it became a world agenda then hell the shit may start flushing down the world pipe...

Anyway... Let it be known now I'm not the smartest of people and hell even I gotta do allot better as a person because I'm in know ways perfect.
Just thought I'd slap down a few of my views. I love my country and am so lucky it gives me the chance to spread my wings. I think more countries have to give their peoples that right aswell.

And I'm out.....
