Could the Green Party please answer me these few questions.

1. How much do you think carbon emissions need to be cut by and by when, in order to stop global warming?

2. How are you going to achieve these targets in coalition with a right-wing party?

3. Will the ending of the US millitary's Shannon stopover, the processing of the gas in the Corrib basin safely offshore and the renegociation of the deal which gave away this vast resource be a precondition to any coalition deal?

talking about the election in the west the labour party man in sligo/leitrim jinny mc garry used hes casting vote on the council last monday to up water charges and bring in meters for every farmer in the county sligo As this was a pilot for the whole country ilike to hear what labour members in rural areas have to say

author by Red Peasantpublication date Mon Jan 22, 2007 15:54author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Farmers are businesspeople and have always paid water rates. I think this whole Sligo thing is just another farmer con job to avoid having to pay rates.

In the past the Anti Water charges Campaign was only opposed to domestic charges. It never opposed charges for farmers or other businesspeople. The Campaign Against the Bin Tax only opposes domestic charges.

Make farmers and business owners pay through the nose! If they get away with not paying then you can be sure that the burden will be passed on to PAYE workers.

the vote on watermeters in sligo was important for two reasons 1 it means if a farmer had four plots of land he will have four meters and four bills 2 it also see,s the first break in the labour/FF pact clr bree voting with the other side could this be that bree is about to entry the general election as a indy

"Make farmers and business owners pay through the nose! If they get away with not paying then you can be sure that the burden will be passed on to PAYE workers"

What planet are you on? Most farmers in Sligo are of moderate to small holdings and even with EU grants are barely surviving.

Dont make this a divisive issue, you're coming in from left of field, miles off topic and obviously have an agenda.

The common misconception that all farmers are wealthy and have thousands of acres of prime pasture with millions in assets, needs to be turned on its head in any case.

McGarry is waste of space as a cllr, at least everyone bar the clowns that vote for him know that. But this Red Peasant is building straw men and talkin out his hole.

This is a red herring. Farmers have always paid rates. They are now trying another conjob on the taxpayers, the ordinary working class people.

Squeze the farmers and business! If they dont pay rates then workers will end up paying it for them!

"This is a red herring. Farmers have always paid rates. They are now trying another conjob on the taxpayers, the ordinary working class people.

Squeze the farmers and business! If they dont pay rates then workers will end up paying it for them!"

What con job? What are you talking about? Did you get a lap top for Christmas from mummy and daddy and decide to cruise the internet for a spot of mischief?

Why are you lumping farmers in with business? A bigger target for your rubbish?

Farmers have paid rates, but we have paid flat rates (same for business big and small). Now, specifically water use is being metered and charges (which vary from county to county) are being applied in a disingenuous manner which extra charges lumped in for each meter installed.
Are you some sort of spokes person for water charges masquerading as a voice of the left?. Whilst endorsing a gobshite like Jimmy McGarry?

Not all business’ are large evil multi-nationals so you are incorrect in assuming everyone will row in behind you and join in your ridiculous chorus of ‘them and us.’ And what’s this bullshit about PAYE workers paying through the nose?
Unsubstantiated diatribe from a government mouthpiece with little or no acumen as to how farmers or business’ (of any size) operate is hardly inspiring anyone to fall for this bluff.

With small farmers like myself already ‘squeezed’ by external market forces and supermarkets dictating unrealistically low prices, do you expect me to absorb this extra cost without passing it on to my customers (i.e. Supermarkets)? With the knock on effect being passed on to the consumer (ie you)!

But really…. What the f*ck has this got to do with Trevor Sergeant formally launching the General Election Campaign of Mayor of Galway City, Niall Ó Brolchain? Set up another thread on this topic if it irritates you that much. Maybe there people can find out who are you preaching to and on who’s behalf?

All farmers get payments which are taken from the pockets of PAYE workers. So what about small farmers? Why should they be subsidised? Do self-employed carpenters, plumbers, barbers etc get huge handouts? They do not!

Workers are fed up with farmers ripping them off. This is a conjob, farmers pay practically no tax, now they are trying to get out of paying water rates. Well they dont deserve the support of anyone on the left. Neither the campaign against water charges or the Campaign Against the Bin Tax supported the dropping of charges for farmers or other business owners. None of the left organisations support such a notion.

Who are you representing? The left or Jimmy McGarry?

PAYE workers do not pay for Farmers Subsidies, they come from the EU and since Ireland is not yet a net contributor PAYE workers in Ireland are not footing the bill.

You peasant are a lier and are twisting the facts to create 'a them and us' situation where none exists..
You obviously agree with water metering then because the next step after this is domestic water metering.

I dont know why you dont realise that farmers are bloody struggling where as carpenters and the like are not. I am working class, work damn harder than you ever will, and make a little less than the aver. industrial wage, without subs I would go under.

Tackle the real issues here and stop inventing them
Stop with yer lies and let me have me tea in peace you mouthpiece.

"Who are you representing? The left or Jimmy McGarry?"

The Left. Only a conwoman would suggest that I am a supporter of McGarry. Educate yourself: the Left have only opposed domestic rates. The Left has never suggested that farmers or other business owners should be allowed to evade paying rates.

"PAYE workers do not pay for Farmers Subsidies, they come from the EU and since Ireland is not yet a net contributor PAYE workers in Ireland are not footing the bill."

Educate yourself. Hundreds of millions of the payments to farmers come from the Irish Exchequer. You really dont seem to know much about your specialist subject.. You seem to be happy that Irish farmers are sticking their hands intio the pockets of European workers as well.

"You peasant are a lier and are twisting the facts to create 'a them and us' situation where none exists.."

You are the liar (note spelling). There is a them and us situation. Farmers get money from the taxpayers and give nothing back. Due to crooked accounting and our sick tax system; it is not unusual for farming families to have a medical cards and get third level grants but the farm labourers working for them will be "earning too much" to get these concessions.

"You obviously agree with water metering then because the next step after this is domestic water metering."

I agree with water metering for business owners such as farmers. I will of course oppose domestic charges.

"I dont know why you dont realise that farmers are bloody struggling where as carpenters and the like are not. "

Tell that to a carpenter!

"I am working class, work damn harder than you ever will,"

If you are a farmer then you are not a worker. You are a member of another class who has different class interests.

"and make a little less than the aver. industrial wage, without subs I would go under."

My heart bleeds for you. Why should you get a sudsidy from the pockets of workers?

"Tackle the real issues here and stop inventing them"

I am dealing with the real issues. The fact that you and your ilk are the one truly parasitic class in Ireland. Farmers are paid not to pollute! Imagine that! But they still regularly poison the land and the rivers.

No need to educate myself, heres all the info anyone who wants to find out for themselves need read.

Some subsidies do come from Government but these are rebated from the Central EU Exchequer once certain directives regarding pollution etc are shown to be adhered to. Here in lies the bogey man you seem intent on wrecklessly whipping up.

Its clear you wont be knocking on any rural doors so you seem to feel free to spout any amount of crap that you think supports your off the wall accusations.

"Only a conwoman would suggest that I am a supporter of McGarry"

What? Where do you get that idea? You come on here cheering on McGarry for stickin it to the farmers and then expect me to somehow know you are not a supporter of his but infact a supporter of the Left.
I Dont even know you. Should I?
Which branch of the left do you represent? Stalin? It would certain fit in with the cult of personality you have deluded yourself into.

"I agree with water metering for business owners such as farmers. I will of course oppose domestic charges."

Will you now, from what platform? Are you running for election?
If you are, are you posting annonymously on Indlymedia trying to sound out support? OMG

"The fact that you and your ilk are the one truly parasitic class in Ireland."

Does this pass for the language of the left these days? Hysterics and poppycock.

I dont know who you represent and I dont care. Your flogging a dead horse on this issue and your pedantic ridicule of a spelling mistake exposes the shallowness of your character.

author by Red Peasantpublication date Tue Jan 23, 2007 19:16author address author phone Report this post to the editors

So you admit that some of the subsidies come from the Irish Exchequer. How nice of you. But they are not all claimed back from the EU. Yes, farmers are parasites. They take money from Irish and European workers. Farmers are the class enemy of workers.

No, I dont support McGarry in general but three cheers for him for having the guts to stand up against the farmers. That takes courage in a rural constituency.

Whinge all you want but you will find that the Left have little sympathy for farmers. Don't get a swelled head just because an opportunist Stalinist like Bree supported you on one vote. Stalin was really the farmers friend wasn't he? Are you seriously unaware of Brees Stalinist politics?

If you are a working farmer then how come you are online so much? Do you have a laptop in the tractor?

You do not deserve any subsidies. No other self employed or small business people are treated like farmers. I dont think anyone on the left would support an average payment of €15,000 per annum to barbers, taxi-drivers or plumbers. So why should farmers be paid this out of the pockets of Irish and European workers?

author by Red Peasantpublication date Tue Jan 23, 2007 19:21author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Its laughable to suggest that farmers adhere to environmental regulations. Farmers opposed the limits on the amounts of fertiliser they could put on land. They are so short sighted they poison their own land and everyones water. At present they farmers are refusing to allow environmental inspectors on their land. Why ? Because they want advance notice of inspections! These guys have a sense of humour. But they are laughing all the way to the bank - with our money intheir pockets.
