This Tuesday 16th October will mark the 15th Anniversary of leading Sinn Féin activist Sheena Campbell.

Sheena Campbell was murdered by a Unionist Death Squad as she drank with friends at the York Bar, in the University area of South Belfast. She was studying at Queens University.

Speaking on her death at the 1992 Sinn Féin Ard Fheis Gerry Adams said,

“Sheena Campbell was murdered because she was a republican, because she was a woman, because she was a leader of our struggle…”

The high regard that Sheena was held in by republican activists has ensured that two University cumanns are named in her memory, Queens Belfast and DCU Dublin.

The Sheena Campbell Ógra Shinn Féin cumann at Queens, are organising a number events to remember her life and legacy.

The two events are taking place on Wednesday 17th October at Queens University.

There will be a Black Flag Vigil at Queens University front gates at 1pm and there will be the Inaugural Sheena Campbell Memorial Lecture at 6pm by Eibhlin Glenholmes in Room G06 of the Peter Froggatt Centre, in Queens.

Grace Lynch of the Sheena Campbell cumann urged people to attend, saying,

“Sheena Campbell was an inspirational and far sighted activist whose electoral strategy helped professionalise Sinn Féin’s approach to elections. She displayed many leadership qualities in her young life, and her death was a huge loss to the Republican struggle.

“We would ask you to join us on Wednesday to Remember Sheena’s life and to send a message to the Unionist death squads and colluders in the British Securocrats that her legacy will be a confident, educated activist base achieving our objectives in memory of people like Sheena.”

Everyone needs to look to themselves and ask the question "How did the situation arise that the finest of young people, the very future of our land had to die in such a way?" I know many will see it in black and white, it was one sides fault and nothing to do with us. But with so much blood spilled, I hope on both sides the question is being addressed honestly.
