This an extract of a letter from The National Union of Dismissed and Unemployed Workers of Iran To the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) regarding workers being flogged for participating in May 1st actions in Iran. Full text at the link. On 14 Feb 2008 the court issued an unofficial summons ordering Mr. Seddigh Amjadi, one of the 11 convicted workers, to appear before it on 16 Feb. The court forced his family to pay the fine and executed the 10 lashes on him on the spot.* |

Jump To Comment: 1A fifth worker, Abbas Andaryari was fined and flogged at the court in Sanandaj, Sedigh Sobhaani was also flogged and made to pay a fine. The two workers had been sentenced to lashes and fines along with 9 others for taking part in May Day celebrations last year. However, in the case of Mr Andaryari, the Appeal Court ruling had not included lashing. But when he attended the court to pay the fine, the judge personally handed the lash to a soldier and ordered that he also be flogged. According to the Union, the flogging has severely affected Mr Andaryari psychologically. On 16 and 19 February, three workers, Sedigh Amajadi, Habibollah Kalekaani and Faares Gavilian were fined and flogged. Summons have been issued for two other workers, Tayyeb Chatani and Tayyeb Moulaee, who may be arrested and flogged at any moment.
