Thursday March 06, 2008 16:59 by Alan M. - Workers Solidarity Movement wsm_ireland at yahoo dot com
We all enjoy the Sunday papers - war, occupation, terror, spending cuts, corruption and climate change. What they fail to present us with is a meaningful alternative, a response to the bad news, a project we can all get stuck into - one which can liberate us both as individuals and as a society. In Ireland the movement to build an anarchist alternative has gained ground steadily this decade but this work is still just beginning. In Galway, on Tuesday 25th March, the Irish anarchist group Workers Solidarity Movement will host a discussion explaining the work that we have done and how this can be expanded and built upon. |

Will post the new date over the next few days.
Along with the updated lovely (gotta disagree with above contributor) poster.
Solidarity with Galway Anarchists nonetheless . What we really need now , as the article says , is a meaningful alternative. The Irish public is crying out for one !
I hope the Galway gig will be able to tease out some of the problems facing the growth of Irish anarchism . I don't think it's enough for us to be compassionate and caring , anarchists are both and we don't need to apologize to anybody for that . So why are we so small , why do people not take us seriously ? If the meeting's organizers are prepared to ask such hard questions , I believe that slowly but confidently we can move forward .
Our problems are ( imo) twofold : firstly , obvious practical problems of organization .But secondly , and perhaps more importantly is the way anarchism is seen by ordinary people . The two problems are linked .To resolve them we therefore need to address the pressing issue of how to unite and organize our splintered movement around core policies to obtain a radical consensus .
We must move beyond the extreme politics that have kept us marginalized for so long ,and reach out to all sections - Green , Buddhist , Christian ,as well as Bukunist and more traditional interpretations- of anarchist teaching . To do that it is important we adopt sensible policies to put anarchism where it deserves to be - in the very centre of Irish politics.
I do think that Alan’s graphic is unhelpful in that regard .
