Taoiseach Bartholomew Ahern to retire May 6th

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday April 02, 2008 11:36author by Justin Morahan Report this post to the editors

Mahon Tribunal difficulties appear to have finally forced his decision

Mr Ahern has just announced that he will retire as Taoiseach on May 6th

In a shock press interview Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has announced that he will offer his resignation to the President of Ireland on May 6th and will retire at the same time as President of Fianna Fáil.

He was surrounded by Cabinet membersas he made the announcement and left without taking questions immediately after readinfg out his statement. As he left he was applauded by his Cabinet.

The announcement came before the opening of the Dáil where he was expecting difficult questions about the truth of his evidence before the Mahon Tribunal.

If the Mahon Tribunal was the cause, it is significant that he is stepping down because of this rather than for having destroyed Ireland's neutrality by supporting war without Dáil ratification and on an ongoing basis by his support for the US role in the ongoing war there.

The joke will be on Ireland and its electorate. He follows the illustrious line of resignations of Mr. Justice Hugh O'Flaherty, Mr Justice Cyril Kelly and Dublin County Registrar Michael Quinlan (intervention in Sheedy release), Judge Brian Curtin (allegation of paedophile pornography), Junior Environment Minister Bobby Molly (intervention in Patrick Naughton rape case), Judge Donnchadh "Naughty" O’Buachalla (friendship with Catherine Nevin / relicensing of Jack White's) and all the others who got caught.

Like all these previous resignations, are we now unable to continue enquiries into alleged wrongdoing?

It's certainly one in the eye for the FF fools who parroted that idiotic "the highest court in the land has proved him honest" electoral success mantra.

He should be tried for other crimes such as....

1. Treason. He should be arrested and tried for treason for handing 410 billion of Your money to Shell and Statoil.

2. War Crimes. He should be brought before the International War Crimes Tribunal for Illegal participation in an unprovolked Illegal act of agression on the people of Iraq.

3. Genocide. His and his governments participation in the ongoing genocide in Iraq which has claimed the lives of 1,200,000 innocent civilians which has left in its wake 500,000 widows and five million-repeat Five Million orphans.

4. Fraud. Selling off the 'profit making' services in this country, bulit and paid for by past generations of hard working Irish citizens, to his cronies.

Bertie Ahern's exemplary leadership of this country, his stewardship of the Irish economy and his central role in the peace process have made a permanent mark on the nation.

Bertie Ahern's name will be remembered in the roll call of our greatest Irish heroes:
Fionn MacCool, Niall of the Nine Hostages, St. Colmcille, Brian Boru, Silken Thomas, Hugh O'Neill, William Sarsfield, Henry Grattan, Arthur Wellesly, Daniel O'Connell, Charles Stuart Parnell, John Redmond, Ernest Shackleton, Tom Crean, Michael Collins, Eamon De Valera, Charles Haughey, Ben Dunne, Peter O' Toole, Richard Harris, James Joyce, Ronny Drew, Nicky English and Roy Keane.

I demand that the Spire be torn down and a statue of the great man himself be built in its stead!

"Free from gross passion or of mirth or anger
constant in spirit, not swerving with the blood,
garnish'd and deck'd in modest compliment,
not working with the eye without the ear,
and but in purged judgement trusting neither?
Such and so finely bolted didst thou seem."

He will be remembered for decades for his part in squandering ten years of unprecedented global boom on a property bubble which left his Landlord backers unimaginably wealthy and turned a whole generation of Irish people into mere money gatherers for the Landlord class. He left Irish industry with a smaller share of the world market than when he took office. Indeed, his policy of clearing the way for the Gombeen land scam left Irish industry completely starved of capital. He imported tens of thousands of foreign workers so that the Irish working class have been completely sidelined and disempowered. A new CORI report shows that 20% of the population live in constant poverty with less than 150,000 people having escaped the poverty trap during ten years of unprecedented global boom. The public health service has been run down into the dirty and dangerous state it is now in - while public hospital land has been given away to build private hospitals for the privileged. The public mental hospitals are an absolute disgrace, with hospital lands being given away for private car parks etc. with no compensation to the mental health sector. Of course, Bertie will be remembered for a long time for his treason in signing the GFA which purports to recognise British misrule in Ireland as legitimate.

However, all the above Gombeenism and treachery will fade in the mists of time. What Bertie will be remembered for till the end of the human race will be the bulldozing of Tara. This crime will not, and cannot be forgotten. Only the lowest form of lout would even contemplate pouring concrete over the sacred valley of Tara.

Enda has been very quiet of late?

Today someone put a microphone to his face and he said there should be an election!

I don't think he has challenged a single issue and takes responsibility for the political crisis by his
religious retort: " FG will not obstruct the passage of this legislation through the Oireachtas"

The man has been ruling by decree throughout his supposed oppositional leadership and no-one
wants an election on the failure of health or environmental policy to aid those who refused to
deal with these issues at the time of FF/PD majority rule.

Thats too like stealing candy from a baby.

Cael - CORI are ideological axe grinders with a stress on “relative poverty” and “at risk of poverty” where data can be bent to mean all kinds of things including that a prosperous person by almost any standards could still be a poor person by the standards of Fr. Sean Healy. Reliance on their headlines for ideological points does not amount to much.

If you regard the GFA agreement then the Irish people north and south who voted to accept the agreement are guilty of treason as well as the elected Government of the Republic of Government. I don’t know what planet you live on but it is not possible for both the democratic Irish Government and the people of Ireland to be treasonous. Treasonous against what? Maybe it is you that is deluded and out of step not these diverse other parties.

Living as I do in far far away land, I often miss the feeling on the ground, underestimate the pulse of the heartbeat of the modern Irish people. Which is why thankfully I never feel moved to offer opinions on the politics or society of my youth. But now & again, something of such historic nature happens which moves to leave a comment on Indymedia Ireland or write a letter to the Irish Times. Today in the course of my usual pursuit of a gainful living with the least possible drudge, made easy by a modern transport system and the security of a health service which is only just reaching saturation point, I received text messages from Ireland filling me in on the news . I bumped into other Irish people who like me now forage for grubs in the city where I live (Barcelona) & though many of them are not of a particularly religious nature, I was astounded that all of them mentioned the announced resignation of Bart Ahern aka Bertie "the supreme rascal".

Sure it's the news in the Diasporia.

But I don't really understand what has happened. I don't know if ye want an election today 231 days after the last one, or if you will want one on the 6th of May. Will ye get the mammy Harney out next time? Will ye take as done & neutered the Green party of Gummy Gormley? and seriously search left wing alliances just in the silly hope of "we always lose elections so why don't we take a chance & pretend to be really socialists?". Or will you all await the resignation of Gerry Adams to complete the valedictories of a generation of Irish leadership.

They're all off to the House of Lords, & I'd like to ping just a few of the illustrations which over the last years expressed the scope of Bertie's reach.

I'd tell you to wait @ least 3 days before deciding you want a General Election. I last posted the trusty illustration "a lot of damage done - more to do" the days 320 ago we learnt he had, fulfilling all proper expectations, won another term. His party did not implode. Close observers are perhaps still reeling from the shocking news, yesterday & not fully internalised the full ramifications of one of the captions under an illustration above; that there will be no more "-ies" at the pinacle of Irish political leadership. They might think we're going beyond Charlie and Bertie to find ourselves in the squeeky clean domain of fiscal propriety. Bollox to that. Such a yoke would never inspire the trust the lumpen Irish voter who is up to his & her neck in dodging, scamming & get rich quick schemes. No, it meant the next leader of FF will not have a name you can readily put an "Y" sound at the end of. Thus we see 9mm Willy O'Dea, once the hope of the provincial cumann member fall not on the basis of his ronnie moustache, but that troublesome affectionate little extra sylable.

Next tip.

Ireland is used to ugly leaders. Ideally the Irish ruling class true to its absentee overseas landholding aspirations would be happy to see the whole front bench of the Dail taken up by only three bodies, and particularly ugly bodies at that.

:- you see?
Being good with figures doesn't come into it, the unconscious self-perception does. Modern Ireland has more in common with a lifelong sufferer from bulimia nervosa whose gag reflex has finally given up than any Rose of Tralee in a pretty frock.

Where are the below figures from? They are used above to push for charges of genocide against the T.

'1,200,000 innocent civilians which has left in its wake 500,000 widows and five million-repeat Five Million orphans.'

By my reckoning they don't make much sense.

1.2million dead total

.5 mil must be married men to leave .5 mil widows.

That leaves .7 mil dead.

If we assume (unlikely but run with it) these are all married adults, then 350,000 fathers and 350,000 mothers could have passed away.

With this calculation each of those families would have to have an average of 14.3 surviving kids to leave 5 million orphans.

The sums don't work.

People don't often stop me on the street in far far away land to inquire why I put more effort into influencing the selection of the publically identified leaders of my class or ideological enemies than I do into worrying about shite like "would we have noticed how gummy Gormley was if the Greens hadn't yielded to ministerial portfolio temptation & entered the suicide pact which is a junior coalition partner to any FF administration?" . But continuing from the block of illustrations above which offered just 8 takes on the scope of Bertie's leadership & my last comment comparing modern Ireland's unconscious self-perception to a lifelong sufferer of bulimia nerviosa who has lost the gag reflex, I'd like to now excite serious tactical (as distinct from strategic) discussion amongst the left in Ireland on who will make a better replacement for Bertie Ahern, now that his previous ambition to run for the presidency in 2011 seems somewhat on a backburner. the tendency to think ahead is one of my more difficult contributions to recognise..,

Most people in Ireland seem to be stuck in the rut of the sleezey stuff & the Mahon shite. Naturally, your local media time has given as much to that as the British media gave to honours for cash leading up to Mr Blair's conversion to the Church of Rome. It would be hoped by now that those journalists of d'Olier street & other commercial newspapers who must be clapping each other on the backs (taking due caution not to knock the drunken hack off his/her barstool) are now combing the statements of the Brian "the brawny " Cowan ;-
on the Mahon Tribunal,
the Belfast Agreement which Gerry Adams talked about today to the Irish Times, converting to Catholicism,
laughing at Brazilian go-go dancers whilst standing next to Chavez,
how to disarm 9mm Willy O'Dea,
how to counterpoint nice Mr Brown,
how to work with either Hilary or Obama,
how to ensure Mary Harney that former FF rose for whose continued incompetence & wanton cruelty the current administration seems to have been tailor made,
who he wants as leader of the DUP now his FF will organise in the wee six counties,
how to keep the Independent TD's cushty & compliant & thus against all futurology hold this administration for full term,

The list goes on............oh yes..........it does............

You need more than a set of chins to lead both FF & replace Bertie. The Brits had it much easier on reflection. For years it was taken for granted that someday Tony Blair would leave having brought Orwell's wartime analysis of how perverse the British Labour movement would need become to move to the status of one party government and he would be replaced by Gordon Brown, not only as leader but in style and hard-to-see substance.

Is Brian "the brawn" Cowen up to the challenge of leading the sector of Irish society which considers itself the natural party of government any further - especially considering our mate Gerry hasn't called his swansong date yet? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. If they wanted more of the same and just a caretaker Taoiseach prepared to take it on the chin (labouring that joke sorry) they ought to have just invited Mary Harney (the sole TD for the rump of the PD party) back into the FF fold and given her the job of caretaker Taoiseach. That way, at least the lumpen Irish "on the piggy's back" class would have an opportunity to remember how their gag reflex worked & thus be properly prepared for any fiscal & economic downsizing which might just be around the corner.

At last, without boring ye, can I opine that it seems to be going well - nothing new or brilliant from the FF crew - no obvious realisation that the future leadership of the DUP and the USA really ought to have taken priority. Ye had so long of Bertie, and wanted him to go for so long, that ye possibly missed the point that a septic boil is sometimes best lanced under certain phases of the moon.

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has denied that he has questions to answer in relation to a report in today's Irish Times that he received money from businessmen......He told journalists that it was 'none of their business' if he got something from somebody as a present. He said today's allegation that he had received payments of between €50,000 and €100,000 was 'off the wall' and 'an unfair, unjust leak'......Mr Ahern added that he was not answering what he got for his Holy Communion money, his confirmation money, or his birthday.

with Lady Lavery on one side (the wife of the painter John) posing as Erin (but with her tits covered) and the rivers Blackwater and Boyne on the other side respectively. That would be the river Blackwater in Munster now, for as all nit-pickers know there are three in Ireland.

But having got out my reading lenses & sit closer to the computer screen I see Mike of the Judean Popular Peoples Front is correct. Young Bertie is holding a fistful of Series E Sterling notes & at the time of his first holy communion (bless him) he would have asking his mot of then to bring Series C notes to the AIB with depictions of Britannia on them. But of course the AIB itself did not start operating under that title until 1970. Previously though an incorporated (as the name "allied" suggests) bank its branches continued to operate under their previous names. I'd go out on a long shot here & suggest the wee Bertie's first young wan was asked to bring the wad to the cute hoor piggy bank .

taoiseach is joining the anti-poverty campaign, which will probably tie into the
Tony Blair Faith Foundation. (this is a corporate ecumenical service which defines God)

Please, someone wake me up.
1% of the worl'ds titled land is owned by women.

Anti-poverty means honesty and Geldof is a rich man with socialite daughters hunting
husband material not a one of these people know about poverty. not one.
