Thanks for the photos. I watched the news this evening and they showed Christian Israeli sympathisers on one side of the Dáil gates and Palestinians on the other chanting slogans at each other.

When will the next protest be held? I dont see anything soon for Dublin on the events board.

Last night while on the phone home to a "Normal Joe" I was told that the "Gaza situation seems to be dying down here", that there is less news of it in the papers etc. Whats happening is a massacre and needs to be stopped, From afar, here in Barcelona im wondering if there could not be more going on in Ireland to expresss solidarity with Gaza and to help turn things around.

"A large crowd estimated of 1,500 -2,000 marched to the Israeli embassy on a cold day in Dublin" Thats only about 1% of the Population of Dublin alone, is this not a disgraceful turn out? In Barcelonas demo on Saturday there about 100 times as that, the population of BCN is about twice that of Dublin... Here there were between 100,000 - 175,000 people on the streets, thats about 2 full Croke parks!

how many thousands turned out for the previous Dublin demo after new years? What were the rest of the figures from around the country, was this an international day of demonstration like F15 (the big demo before the war in Iraq) or just localised ones? Eitherway Im astonished by the difference in numbers. Is there something im missing here?

Why so few on the streets?
On another IMC-IE thread about the politics of politics (why some march, why some dont, why some feel political parties are not welcome, leap frog tactics of left groups going for poll position, infighting of the Irish left....etc) there are calls for political parties to stay at home, or not mobilise, give out papers, sell papers, banners, flags, scarves etc... Some argue that marching to empty buildings and shouting at them achieves nothing. I disagree, demos in themselves to not change things, but they are a usefull tool to create the environment and mass movement that can, for many people such a demo is their first "political" step, from which they might get involved directly with IPSC or other groups, deepening the boycott movemnet or end up using NVDA to great effect. If no one goes to the demos, like it or not, from the outside it looks like that place doesent care. Maybe im wrong but thats the message im recieving and seeing. That thread is entitled Political Parties Hijack Protests @ http://www.indymedia.ie/article/90507

Being on the streets directly expressing solidarity with Palestinians does matter, it shows we care. These are issues of what Micheal Albert labels "stickyness", I think we could explore these ideas more.

A report of the BCN demo can be found at First they came for the communists, now they are coming for the Palestinians @ http://www.indymedia.ie/article/90538

Meanwhile in Norwegians pro Israel demo, things took a stronger tone...

It was a bitterly cold and very windy day. Anyone who I talked to seemed to think it was a very good turnout. I couldn't see the head of the march, which is quite rare. I'm no good at counting crowds but I'm quite sure there were more than 1500 there.
