This is all well and good but I am not entirely convinced dog sledding is in any way traumatic for the dog. No evidence to this fact is offered and it seems to me, since its so cold, surely running keeps them warm?
'The Alliance for Animal Rights is horrified to learn that the ISPCA are promoting and using DOG SLED TREKING IN NORWAY as a fundraiser in 2010. They describe the event as follows on their website without a word of concern for the Huskie dogs involved.'
MAVERICK says: - oh diddums! here come the species sentimentalists...the so-called plight of working dogs is grossly exaggerated. they are not wimps.
"Canadian Eskimo Dogs need a very large amount of exercise. They cannot just be walked, they need higher intensity work, requiring more exercise than many dog owners can give. This need for work and stimulation also makes them well suited for dog sports, such as carting, mushing, and skijoring." quote source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Eskimo_Dog
what does AAR have to say about indigenous Innuit natives, in the fragile polar enviroment, using Husky dogs - as against the carbon footprint of ski-mobiles? should the Innuit perhaps be punished by "well meaning" Big Liberal Whitey for "abusing" dogs?
-15C is positively balmy for a siberian huskey. They thrive on it. They make terrible pets because few people are able to give them anything like the amount of exercise they need. Adopting a huskey and leaving it in your back garden for most of the day, is probably the worst thing you can do to it. They are bred to work hard in sub-zero temperatures, It's what they do. A huskie is happier and healthier working hard all day than sitting on your patio howling from boredom and lack of stimulation. Please don't be so silly.
regards Nuala.
"Adopting a huskey and leaving it in your back garden for most of the day, is probably the worst thing you can do to it."
Not the worst (possibly skinning him/her alive for their fur would be the WORST, but I get your [point. Huskies do not make great "pets" unless you are willing to put in the hours to ensure the dog is stimulated. Neither do collies for that matter.
A friend of mine had a rescue Husky once, and eventually sent him to a farm to live as he was in town and didn't have the space. Barry (the dog) was rescued from the streets of Paris (they were fashionable there for a while) and was a fantastic dog, but kept escaping and going to the zoo. When he was found in a fight with a gang of beavers he was sent to another friends farm in the countryside where he had fields to run in, and he was much happier there. I kid you not, this is a true story.
However, there is a VAST difference between stimulating your dog (with long walks/runs and games etc, and, as is said above, tying them to other dogs to pull heavy people around for 8 hours a day. Has nobody read The Call of the Wild? A sled dog's life is far from happy. Yes it is natural to run, and to run in packs. It is not natural to be tied to other dogs and pull humans around and be told where to go. The dogs in this situation are NOT having fun (like my 2 do once off the lead). They cannot run around playing or following scents or pointlessly chasing the birds that taunt them. They are TIED UP. Like a dog is in a "back garden for most of the day" only worse as they cannot rest when they want, stop to pee when they want, move as they want.... Their freedom is even LESS than if they were tied up. True, they will be too tired to display so-called behavioural problems, but that only benefits the human and simply means that the dog is too worm out to display the frustration and unhappiness felt.
I never had much respect for the ISPCA. Now I have NONE. Shame on them.
My reading of Jack London's immortal novels of the Far North in Canada, Call of the Wild and White Fang, is that teams of husky dogs really love the tough and tumble of running along the icy snow pulling sleds with riders and pelts. Where did Jack London get it wrong?
I'm not sure what version of London you read but "rough and tumble" hardly fits with his realism!
You really interpret happy dogs having fun from those novels?????
If so I question your basic literacy never mind your capability for literary analysis!
"Yes it is natural to run, and to run in packs. It is not natural to be tied to other dogs and pull humans around and be told where to go."
Have they not been bred for centuries for this specific purpose?
"The dogs in this situation are NOT having fun"<
Again, evidence please. Any footage I have seen of sled dogs seem to be fine with their treatment, even happy. Not claiming to be an expert in sled dogs but am yet to see evidence to the contrary.
"I never had much respect for the ISPCA"
Yes, devoting ones life to the proper treatment of animals is so stupid.
Most of your post was such ridiculous crap and had been addressed previously that I cannot respond (I feel for those who are learning impaired and need to repeat themselves like you) however I will respond to the following:
