Maura Harrington has a psychiatric illness called conscience

category galway | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Friday March 13, 2009 22:24author by TD - Galway Shell to Sea Report this post to the editors

“I think this is terribly, terribly, dangerous” (Senator David Norris)

Besides the draconian and unjust imprisonment of Maura Harrington for the relatively mild offence of slapping a Guard across the face during of the course of a Shell operation in which 20 protestors were injured by Garda acting as Shell's thugs and battering ram in forcing a path for a digger and which none of them have been brought to book, it was the sinister decision of Judge Devins for Maura Harrington to be psychiatrically assessed that drew the most condemnation and fire, notably Senator David Norris who described it as "terribly, terribly, dangerous.”
Naoise
Naoise

... and after calling for a debate on the Corrib gasfield scandal went on to say that a minister of the day had given this field away for nothing to Shell, which was one of the worst polluters and one of the most avid multinationals and that he would be very sorry if, the Garda having been enlisted on behalf of a multinational, the court system should then begin to play a role in this matter (see link).

If this sinister decision is not an alarming return to Soviet era tactics in silencing and stigmatising dissent and conscience through the abuse of psychiatry?, then, what is it based on ?, the ad feminem nonsense of Judge Devins, perhaps? who "witnessed the enjoyment she (Maura) seems to get in being in the public limelight" - If this is a suitable case for treatment, then the Irish Times collectively has a more pressing appointment with the psychiatrist based on this loony paradigm than Maura which, yesterday, in its print edition, gloated and "enjoyed" their schadenfreude with obscene relish by highlighting the fact that Maura had to undergo psychiatric evaluation.?

Well done Galway Shell to Sea, and Senator David Norris.

Not so well done Irish Times I always had my suspicions about its integrity, now they have just been confirmed, boycott it as well.

As for Judge Devins statement about Maura, this preposterous, and repugnant statement about Maura is really unbelievable, but it is not it is a fact it was said by Judge Devins, and one wonders what exactly are her Medicial qualifications to make this recomendation?

Her husband who is Dr. Jimmy Devins, and who is a junior Health Minster in the current Government does raise many questions which will have to be answered, maybe not in Ireland but elsewhere.

I'd say Maura Harrington has a psychiatric attribute called integrity: and integrity is the biggest threat there is to the rampant corruption now running wild in our society.

Once again in this article and video all the anger is directed towards Shell thereby letting the major culprit Fianna Fail away scot free. At a time when these traitors are being discovered by the public for what they really are. Fianna Fail are the only people with the power to stop Shell and you are putting no pressure on them. A very big mistake

According to the government, 540,000,000,000 Euro will be given to Shell. Ireland has 0% royalties and they pay a staggering 25% corporation tax (In Norway its up to 78%). But, I guess Ireland doesn't really need this money. We're crackpots for thinking otherwise.....

The DPP's office is based in a building beside the Spar shop at the Jervis Street Luas stop in Dublin, O'C Street direction. It is not widely known that this is the central venue of the DPP.

In view of the multiple incidents and injuries endured by Shell to Sea activists, much of it on film, with damming and conclusive evidence and the fact that not one prosecution has been taken against the gardai, it is crystal clear the the Director of Public Prosecutions is engaged in one sided prosecutions.

I think it would be a very worthwhile exercise to picket and leaflet the DPP's office on a regular basis, concerning it's biased and tainted policy, a loud samba band might be no harm either.

Our taxes, direct and indirect, go into funding this public office and its staff, its remit is not laid down as one sided prosecutions.

This is the office that the Government will refer to if they get into hot water, "out of our hands" etc.

The DPP is a serious mover in this process, their actions and their Head Office should be highlighted.

Solidarity to Maura, Niall and all other comrades in this, what is in reality ,a war for democracy.

As for Mary Devins; that public servant should be subjected to a clever postering campaign questioning her ability to make balanced judgements and that is putting it mildly.

Balanced judgements require a balanced mind 'Judge' Devins !

It is un-acceptable that a people exercising their democratic right to protest in a non- violent way are subjected to such brutal treatment.Reports of many of these incidents have been sent to the ombudsman but unfortunately there is no serious attempt to follow these up or investigate properly..As far as policing the CORRIB PROTEST in a fair and impartial way there are no guidelines ,no holds barred, open season on people of conscience. It is clear that some GARDAI are "OUT OF CONTROL".How ever , we must not allow this to divert from from our goal.We must claim ownership of our natural national resources to be developed for the good of all our people. company buys new media advisor
As Maura Harrrington's husband was making his way from Mountjoy prison to the Dept of Justice last Friday to protest at the imprisonment of the retired schoolteacher, Shell Ireland was announcing that they have appointed another Mayo journalist to help improve their relations with the media in the county.

Denise Horan was editor of the The Mayo News until recently, and has also played football at county level.

She joins a list of other former journalists who have been bought to sing the praises of the project, including including former BBC and RTÉ editor John Egan, who is now a director of Shell Ireland, and Christy Loftus, an old Western People hack and former president of the National Union of Journalists.

She replaces Susan Shannon, who was popular with protesters for her willingness to get involved in stunts such as enacting the hand over of a cheque representing the giveaway of Ireland's resources to multi nationals.

Horan's appointment shows that Shell is serious about controlling the way their operations are reported in Ireland. She is well connected in the county and in Fine Gael circles, and will have considerable influence on how journalists cover the story. It's all about creating an atmosphere.

As another Mayo News reporter put it:

"it is not popular to highlight negatives about the Corrib project.

Shell has done an excellent job with its PR machine, winding its way into every nook and cranny of life in Mayo. It has used donations and grants while also drawing on the expertise of professional people, from former journalists and clergy to senior former Council officials and former senior Gardaí.

Action is taken on critical reports, sometimes directly, other times, indirectly.

Of course there is pressure placed on people who make negative comments about the project."

Psychiatric......an assessment says the Judge.,

Well I come under that label and I am tired of the ignorance and stigma Government and state bodies place upon 'us'. They decide we go into the community and they take the prime properties sell them, and donate the money to other worthwhile causes....

Why.......well for a start vulnerability and secondly the side effects of the medicines, we must take, that make us tired, sick, starving, or as in my case the Lithium I have taken since my last illness in 1998 (5 months and 15 sessions of ECT).

I am totally confused by what I know to be the Separation of Powers in Ireland - the Rule of Law

Devins appears to be a working GP in Sligo and his wife is some for a Judge ....... Is there not a conflict of interests?

I have not the concentration (medications) to read the constitution but far away and long ago pre Accident, Bipola, Lithium poisoning I studied law in England.....and great emphasis was place on the Separation of Powers.

I believe Brian Lenihan's wife is also a Judge as is Minister Aherns.

You are correct in saying Mr. Jimmy Devins, Fianna Fail TD - sorry I meant his wife Judge Mary Devins, before she imprisoned Maura Harrington in prison last week for 28 days. Shameful yes, she asked for a psychiatric report for who? I ask.

Again I repeat the same question repeatedly continuously - where is the Separation of Powers.

Jimmy Devins T.D., Minister of State supports 100% Shell in the west of Ireland. That states his wife sits within a conflict of interest. Judge Devins herself has been in the news some years ago in relation to drunken driving. I have the papers here in front of me. That to me is despicable and very irresponsible.

Judge Devins called Maura Harrington dispicable for assaulting a 6.2 Garda (ft). I find that in itself a total MISCARRIAGE OF WORDS AND JUSTICE.

I will close by saying the people of Ireland should be the nucleus of our court system. It seems to be run by a Fianna Fail Click now and it is time to take back our democracy. Maura Keep Well Tonight........the people of Ireland are with you always and will never forget you.

I am only seeing this now. I must admit to losing interest trying to keep up with the over the top amount of new S2S threads on here. I will be at Protests - and happy to do so just as I have been to the recent happenings but I find it increasingly difficult to keep up with current S2" info overload on Indy. People are posting similar comments on multiple threads so as not to have their voices lost in the confusion- understandably. I only found this one as it was in the side bar, I have stopped looking on the main board. I would suggest that 2-3 threads on the go at any one time is enough.

Anyone else experiencing the same dilemna?

I wonder if the Judge who sentenced Maura Harrison or her husband, TD get qualms of conscience when they see the support Maura has.

To be objective must be very difficult indeed

I wonder what discovery awaits Maura from her experience of being in prison and especially Mountjoy. There is a book on its history. I wonder is it in their library....a comparison would be great

Mountjoy is of the Victorian and correcting soul damage. The cells were for one person only and in there your only companion was the four walls that surrounded you.......and the Bible......

It must be a week now since Maura Harrington's incarceration in Mountjoy. I still have to ask the question - yes, is there, a conflict of interest.

Maura Harrington is a woman of pure conscience and stands by her beliefs against a large corrupt organisation like Shell. But for her beliefs, Mr. Jimmy Devins, Judge of the North West District Court, imprisoned Maura for 28 days.

Again I ask - Dr. Jimmy Devins, FF TD and Minister for State and part of a Govt that supports Shell Oil with the heavy handedness of Gardai. How can hisw wife sit on a bench in Belmullet District court and not be biased. Legally, there is a conflict of interest and where is our Separation of Powers.

We wish you well Maura and you are in our minds all the time.

The "Separation of Powers" doctrine has been replaced by a very sickening and smelly orgy of greed, corruption, crime, and cover-ups in the Republic of Ireland: that's what's happened to it.

This is one of the most amazing aspects of the past 10 years or so of our national history; and, all the more so because ALL of our main political parties appear to have very willingly climbed into the huge "shared bed" together: otherwise the Tripartite Separation of Powers Doctrine could never have been abandoned in the way it has been, simply because it very directly and fully involves all three of the main branches of our Government: Executive, Legislative (Dail Eireann and President Mary McAleese), and Judicial.

Where were the eyes and ears of all our lawyers during this time? -- and where are they now?

Who is going to root out all of unconstitutional legislation (i.e. illegal law) that's been produced by the traitors responsible?

Corruption, Crime, Cover-Ups, Ireland:

It will take a lot more than "a biteen of media spin" to put this legal mess right.

Maura Harrington just passed her first week in Mountjoy prison. Her crime, her compassion, and her feeling of the injustice of the Irish people in the west of Ireland against corporate greed Shell. I have just checked the Tribune Archives and the Sunday Independent, one has mentioned the Separation of Powers as was mentioned today on radio 1.

Many followers of Maura assembled at Mountjoy prison in the past week. A number of them mntioned on radio across Ireland - how can Dr. Jimmy Devins GP TD FF Minister of State be totally for the pipeline while his wife Judge Mary Devins sits on the Bench of Belmullet District Court and imprisons Maura Harrington. As one FG said today, on radio - quietly but he asked - there are questions to be answered. He was shuffled at his constituency

We all know the score by now, or at least we should , it seems the 'authorities' will get away with almost anything in this saga.

Their biggest weapon, deployed very effectively, is their successful use of state/corporate media, to spew out reams of misinformation, blackening out in the process, from the memory of the mass of the population, the atrocious royalties / ownership 'deal'.

This is the second main frontline of action for the 'authorities'.

Opening up several other fronts might consist of a relatively old fashioned, basic use of adhesive lables/posters advertising the websites eg : mayogasinfo.com

The above site provides a very good layout of the staggeringly rotten deal but it needs to be advertised, in order for 'ordinary' Joe and Mary public to know about it.

Information is power and boy do'nt the auhorities know that, they are not always too bright, but they have cottoned onto this big time.

Hopefully we will start advertising our websites on the streets, in the colleges, workplaces, hospitals, etc in order to to counter the black lies, and when it suits, pure censorship by state/corporate media.

The current economic debacle may well provide ready and eager readers who will want to find out about this wonderful deal for big oil at their expense.

They wont read about it in the state/corporate media, so let us, let them know about the 'real deal'.

Solidarity again to Maura and all comrades.
