A recycling plant, a landfill, a shooting range, a business park, park and ride facilities, a visitor centre and community offices

An Bord Pleanala refused planning permission for a recycling centre at the former Asahi factory in Tawnaghmore, Killala, Co. Mayo, after the Killala Community Council and two local residents appealed against Mayo County Council’s granting of planning permission last October. (Western People 2/6/09, p. 4).

Meath Green Part y candidate Fergal O’Byrne has lodged a formal complaint with the EU over Ireland’s failure to comply with EU waste disposal law, citing the case of the landfill at Knockharley, Kentstown, Co. Meath, where he claims the Irish state has failed to put in place a system for pre-treatment of waste prior to landfilling and both Meath County Council and An Bord Pleanala have failed to require pre-treatment as a condition for planning permission. (Meath Chronicle 6/6/09, p. 7).

Planning permission for a shooting range in Tomhaggard, Co. Wexford has been refused by An Bord Pleanala after local residents and the Department of the Environment appealed against planning permission granted by Wexford County Council. (Wexford People 3/5/09, p. 7).

An Bord Pleanala has rejected a proposal by Owenass Developments for a business park near Derryguile, Mountmellick, Co. Laois, which has faced opposition from local residents. (Leinster Express 3/6/09, p. 3).

Local opposition to a proposal by Atlantis Development to develop park and ride facilities for the cliffs of Moher at Liscannor and Doolin, Co. Clare, has received further support from Liscannor parish priest Denis Crosby and the director of the Cliffs of Moher visitor centre. The proposed park and ride developments are currently being examined by An Bord Pleanala. (Clare People, 2/6/09, p. 16).

Clare County Council’s granting of planning permission for a visitor centre at Pol an Ionain has been appealed to An Bord Pleanala by An Taisce and the Pol an Ionain Action Group. (Clare People 2/6/09, p. 16).

The government’s dedication to the integrity of the planning system was shown last week when Minister for Agriculture, Brendan Smith, officially opened community offices in Kingscourt, Co. Cavan, despite these offices not yet having planning permission, being under appeal to An Bord Pleanala. (Anglo-Celt 4/6/09, p.3).
