Plastic Bullet Protest, City Hall Dublin

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Friday September 04, 2009 00:14author by éirígí PRO - éirígí Report this post to the editors

éirígí has organised an anti-plastic bullets protest outside of City Hall in Dublin at 6pm on Monday September 7th. All are welcome. Bígí linn

éirígí will hold an anti-plastic bullets protest outside of City Hall in Dublin at 6pm on Monday 7th September. The protest will coincide with the monthly meeting of Dubin City Council which will vote on a motion calling for the banning of plastic bullets in the Six Counties.

The motion, was drafted in response to the firing of plastic bullets by the PSNI in the Short Strand area of east Belfast on Monday past and in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast on July 13.

The motion reads as follows:

“This council notes with deep concern the firing of plastic bullets by the PSNI in Belfast on July 13 and August 31 2009. These lethal weapons have already killed seventeen Irish citizens and injured and maimed countless others. This council calls for the immediate banning of the use of plastic bullets under any circumstances in the Six Counties before they cause further injury or death.”

Great initative from eirigi. Very fitting that their first motion to any council would be on an issue as important as plastic bullets. For those that dont know much about the issue here is a list of the 17 people killed by 'non-lethal' rubber and plastic bullets in the north.

Francis Rowntree, aged 11, shot in the head by the British army
Tobias Molloy, aged 18, shot in the chest by the British army
Thomas Friel, aged 21, shot in the head by the British army
Stephen Geddis, aged 10, shot in the head by the British army
Brian Stewart, aged 13, shot in the head by the British army
Michael Donnelly, aged 21, shot in the head by the British army
Paul Whitters, aged 15, shot in the chest by the RUC
Julie Livingstone, aged 14, shot in the head by the British army
Carole Ann Kelly, aged 12, shot in the head by the British army
Henry Duffy, aged 45, shot in the head by the British army
Nora McCabe, aged 32, shot in the head by the RUC
Peter Doherty, aged 36, shot in the head by the British army
Peter McGuinness, aged 36, shot in the chest by the British army
Stephen McConomy, aged 11, shot in the head by the British army
John Downes, aged 22, shot in the chest by the RUC
Keith White, aged 20, shot in the head by the RUC
Séamus Duffy, 15, shot in the chest by the RUC

For their sake and the sake of future victims of plastic bullets I hope the councillors back the motion.

Forgive me for being stupid, are plastic bullets the same as baton rounds?

author by Mr Info - information servicespublication date Fri Sep 04, 2009 20:52author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Yes, 'baton round' is the sanitised name for a plastic bullet. A bit like colatoral damage being a code for civilian deaths.

Ah right. Get you now. Like Omagh?

Hard as it is to believe the motion was adopted with full support tonight. Dublin be proud.
